These are amazingly strong safe cars!

Hello all and I just wanted to share with you just how strong and safe the good old FL2 is... certainly reassuring when they contain your loved ones..

A few years ago my elderly father was looking to purchase a practical 4x4...hence we chose the FL2... anyway within a few months of owning the vehicle he was driving back from a meeting with friends.. he was stationary in a line of traffic waiting for someone to cross a pedestrian crossing.

All of a sudden his vehicle was hit from behind by a mini cab driver who wasn’t paying attention to the road in front...

This is the minicab after the collision with the rear of Dad’s car...

The impact forced Dad’s car into the stationary car in front of him...this is that car....

Both of these vehicles were written off and were towed from the scene....

This is Dad’s car......

Afterwards he drove it home from the scene...his car was subsequently repaired and to date he’s still driving it around!,

As such I was so impressed by their structural strength than what better for my daughter to have as her new car...thus for the last two years she has been driving around the country in her own FL2 Sport...

Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago she was involved in a massive accident of her own...

She was pulling across a really dangerous accident black spot when her foot slipped on the pedal. Her FL2 was hit by a 4.5 tonne van doing 40-50 mph which effectively T - boned her vehicle...

This is all that remained of the van...

This is how the FL2 survived

Everyone walked away with nothing more than bruising! Didn’t even know there was an airbag under the steering wheel!

So be confident that you are driving one of the safest vehicles out there! Well done JLR!

As a family we’ve gone straight back out and bought it’s replacement!, and are now proud owners of Archiedogs SD4 in Firenze Red...

Proper cars!

Wow. Glad your loved ones were OK in both of those accidents, and testament to build quality of the FL2 that they look comparatively unscathed compared to the other vehicles.

Doesn't surprise me though - no idea if this is true, but I read that at launch, the FL2 monocoque chassis design was the third strongest in the world, after the Range Rover and the Porsche Cayenne.

In both accidents all the doors and tailgates opened freely and there was no intrusion whatsover into the passenger compartment! Properly tough cars...other than shock all the drivers got out unscathed!

Gets my vote hence why we’ve just gone out and bought another! Very Happy

Nice and reassuring if you own one! Very Happy

Glad everyone was relatively unscathed, a true testimony to modern car safety in the FL2 in particular here.

I was hit from behind a few weeks ago and although at a lower speed, the relative differences in damage were the same. His had to be recovered, I had to look in detail to see what had happened to mine! Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

One of the reasons that the FL2 remained relatively unscathed in the pictures must be down to the height of the bumpers. The FL2 certainly has substantial internal ones front and back but if you look at the damage to the other vehicles it's clear that their bumpers were lower, hence more bodywork took the impact and absorbed the energy. I recall reading about this issue being raised in the US and EU some time ago and that there was a move to get all impact absorbing bumpers at the same height but presumably nothing came of it. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

I recall many years ago some petrol head claiming that it would not be possible to have all bumpers at the same height and cited the Mini and a Rolls Royce. The next day one of the tabloids had a picture from Knightsbridge of a Mini parked facing a Rolls Royce and - guess what - bumpers were the same height! Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

See a few years ago (8?) I was on the M56 in our (my!) FL2, the 3 series in front stopped to avoid an accident, I stopped, but the Almeria behind didn't. He submarined. I drove off his bonnet, checked he was OK and dragged the remnants of his car out of the outside lane onto the hard shoulder.

His car was destroyed (having a FL2 on the bonnet does that), I drove ours home, fixed it and used it for another 6 years.

Would I buy any other car than a Land Rover - you must be joking.

I drive a lot of miles for work every year. I have had two colleges killed while driving for work. It doesn't have to be the other drivers fault, we all make mistakes, it doesn't matter as long as you personally make it home, cars can be replaced, people can't. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
