Remove high pressure fuel pump

Had a search around, and couldnt find anything specific.

Are there any instructions on how to take off the high pressure fuel pump on an 07 freelander 2?

RAC has been out, everything mechanically fine, but low pressure on the fuel rail.

Just gunna bump this up once.

Any advice on replacing the fuel pump guys?

Really struggling to find anything online about replacing it. Is it a simple enough job? does the fuel system need bleeding afterwards? Does the battery and casing need to come out to get to any other hard to see bolts?

Why don't you download the service manual from the link in this topic: https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic10621.html
And look there how to remove the fuel pump...

Hi,

Just a caution before you start to strip the car down. I had a similar situation a few weeks ago. Engine kept cutting out and struggled to restart. Eventually cut out and wouldn't start at all.

I called out the RAC and they said exactly the same thing. It was showing a fault for low pressure at the fuel rail. He pulled off the fuel output pipe from the filter and fuel was coming through when turned over but wouldn't start. He diagnosed a failed high pressure fuel pump.

I arranged recovery to a diesel specialist and braced myself for the bad news! Had a phone call to say that all was sorted and it was just the crank shaft sensor? Cost £110 in total. Much cheaper that a fuel pump but very confusing as I don't understand how the 2 issues can be mixed up? I'm not particularly mechanically minded though so it could be something obvious to others?

Not sure if you have the same issue but might be worth a check to avoid cost?

Ill double check the crank shaft sensor after ive put it all back together now Laughing

Ive had a friend have a look, and RAC also and both said mechanically its fine (it tried to start up with Easy Start spray, but just cut out straight away). So seemingly signs pointed to high pressure fuel pump.

Managed to disassemble yesterday, but couldnt get the new pump lined up with the crank shaft, so giving it another go today.

Hey guys,
Righto! Hit a snag, so have a question.

Does anybody know what the end of the cam should look like? (just want to make sure).

It doesnt matter how I align the fuel pump, it always sits flush. So whether the connecting nut seems aligned, or its way out, the whole pump sits flush. I expected it to almost slot-in, so it would only be flush, once aligned correctly... (sorry if wrong terminology... i mean the part on the pump that connects to the cam).

Picture of inside of cam attached.

Luckily, no broken cam (as far as i can see).

Bloody adaptor, nothing came off the old one, so didnt even know it needed one (until i read that thread you linked to a few hours ago).

Looked under the car. FOUND IT! Must have fallen off as i removed the old one.

Now - the bad news. All put back together, and same as before. Cranking over, but still not firing up.

Any other idea's, advice, or checks to do to filter the problem down? :/

Have you bled the fuel system and change the fuel filter

It was serviced not too long ago, so should have had a new fuel filter. Trying to find my invoice to be sure to be honest.

Is there a preferred way to bleed to fuel system? Ive followed a tutorial of using a suction hand pump on the fuel filter...

Will the new high pressure fuel pump only work if the car gets started with with Easy Start Spray (so the engine fires), or will it have pull enough with just the engine cranking over? And how long should i be cranking for before giving up completely?

It will never pull enough with just the engine cranking over. You need to properly bleed the system.
Or, until you are sure it works, use a local (transparent) fuel can (a PET for example) and insert there the fuel lines, in order to monitor the fuel circulation.

Ok, so with a fuller battery, and some easy start, i can now see the fuel getting pulled through the lines.

It fires up with Easy/Quick Start spray, but then cuts out straight away.

Whats the next thing to change/check? Confused
