Has the freelander 2 got a drain plug....I was on the understanding that they are sealed for life and you had to pump the old oil out if your charging the oil.....or maybe I'm getting confused with something else. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

The box has a drain and filler plug and there are a few different ways of doing a fluid change. By all accounts the life of the box is extended by doing regular fluid changes. Say every 24,000 to 36,000 miles similar to the haldex, rear diff and front transfer box fluid changes. I notice the improvement.

Myself I do the change using the lower cooler pipe to pump the fluid out. using around 12 litres or so in total ( four empty and fills) each time.

If the box is causing problems the first action should be a fluid change.

The gearbox in the video is the AWTF 80 SC. The FL 2 is an AWTF 81 SC, so slightly different. I think. Confused

That is the designation for Volvo.
It's the same box, same oil.

Whatever you do, you MUST undo the filler plug BEFORE you undo the drain plug.

You are going to feel a right wally when you have drained oil out of the box to find that you don't have the right tool to get the filler plug out. You end up with a car that you can't drive and a Censored walk to Halfords in the pouring rain to get robbed for the correct tool. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

The only difference between the Volvo and FL2 procedure in the movie is

1 The use of Volvo software to reset the box
2 Land Rover state the fluid temperature for the final level should be 60C.
