United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Firenze Red
Front Transfer box and manual gearbox oil question?

I was unfortunate to have a leak from the gearbox which was a drive shaft seal a new set of seals for drive shafts and PTU was fitted but the seal from the PTU didnt fit great (due to the seal being slightly lifted upon installation) so it had to have it replaced, anyway the question is the same oil for the gearbox was also used in the PTU, I have since read that they are slightly different 75W-90 GL5 is the oil in both at the moment, is it safe to use or should I change to 75W-80 ???? Thanks for any input 2014 Freelander 2 XS TD4

Check the manual for your model, on the older LR2 the PTU uses a rather different oil: Castrol BOT 118/95 Plus

I'd use what's spec-ed in your manual unless you have competent advice to use an alternative.

Hi,

just to clarify its the Gearbox oil you are on about changing again Question

I would change it as the cost is not out of the way and it should be the 75W80 not 90 it is a straight forward job Thumbs Up

"In the cars manual it shows as Castrol BOT 350 M3 = MTF97309 = GL4 75W80 and has a capacity of 2 litres

You can choice which oil your happy with, I went for Mannol 8109 Unigear, bought 2x1L with a discount code for £11.50 delivered, also bought 2xcopper washers for £2.25 these are 24mmO/D 18mmI/D and 2mm thick crush washers"

Manual box the sensible choice

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

Thank you for the replies, I contacted Bell Engineering for advice as I had work done there before and I trust those guys, should have thought of them first I reckon rather than take time up folks time here, they said PTU and Gearbox using same oil is ok. So I can rest easy I reckon 2014 Freelander 2 XS TD4
