Most regular log book history I've found so far BUT every single service has been ticked 'Oil Service'
A and B have never been ticked in the log book


What exactly is an oil service and how the hell does it differ from an A and B service?

A euphemism for SFA?

A cheapskate (or canny) owner that would only pay for fluids actually being changed and an OBD reading rather than all the 'checks' dealers use to beef up the billable time?

An empty logbook that has been doctored?

An honest workshop that considers the A and B to be crap and just fluids and an OBD reading to be done. That would potentially miss service campaigns and software updates, however.

Its years since people got real services on a car, earlier this century, I used to have a mechanic who would service the car then finish off by greasing all the locks and even check all the tyre pressures . . .

on a full service my local indy greases all the hinges and locks, strips the brakes to inspect, clean, and coppergrease them, and they have the tools to access service logs to do OSH, BMW key history etc etc.

mind you, his prices arent far short of main dealer prices, although he fits quality OEM or manufacturer parts as standard i.e. only Bosch brake discs and pads. Unless you specifically tell him to fit to a budget.

All these log book entries I'm encountering are done by legit LR workshops, but the entries are sloppy as .
Half the time they forget to tick anything or write what appears to be an incorrect date. Pretty sure the books aren't fake.

I can't work out if an 'Oil Service' is supposed to be a lesser service than the alternating A and B service, or if it's supposed to be done in addition to one of those. And perhaps some of the mechanics can't work it out either. I seem to remember some of the books had double ticks (e.g. A + Oil Service).

On a positive note, oil changes every 6 months is great. Pity it may have come at the 'cost' of an actual service!

I have a 2011 SD which does a fairly low mileage and therefore only needs annual servicing. However, regular DPF regeneration results in oil dilution which means that tbe "oil service" warning comes on before the year is up. In theory this means that an oil change is required IN ADDITION to the annual service.

Many years ago I bought a Ford Capri from a Ford dealer that was about a year old. The service book wasn't in the car so the dealer said that they would look around for it and the car had just been serviced anyway. Sure enough a few days later the service book arrived in the post all nicely stamped up etc. OK so far then after a few months I found the original service book wedged under one of the seats ! It too was all stamped up but with different mileages and dates. I suppose these days I would have gone to Trading Standards and kicked up a fuss but I didn't follow it up as the car was fine. Since then I have taken little notice of service history unless accompanied by receipts. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

My independent mechanic did, as the doors were a bit squeaky & stiff due to the outback dust, smooth as silk when I picked up the car.

He also took the TPMS off & upped the pressure 2psi. Wasn't really necessary as the weather was colder by about 2psi. He even checks the spare even though he knows I have 3 compressors, air tank & regulator in the car.
