Quagmire, yes sure. I'm hoping they'll be able to repair it, as I don't relish the thought of a replacement so soon, but I'm not sure if a repair will affect the heating element. I'll find out the price of a replacement either way and post it on here in another of my interesting posts

Come on you two (boiledgnat and thawn) easy easy!! hahaha!! sometimes these tangent subjects do turn into meaningful comments. I'm concerned about this (new windscreens) since after my drivers door mirror was taken off by a T T in a white van, the bodyshop said they could fix a new one on but it would not work until the servicing dealer (they have a split sites for bodywork and service) could configure it to the computer!!!! Is this the same for the windscreen??, since the windscreen is programmed to demist through the computer does this too need to be configured before it will work????? Oh the wonders of computers!!!!

The door mirrors save their position in the front seat memory as well. Their defist function is fully automatic. Hence I would suspect that somekind of programming is necessary (especially with the electric front seats).

I can only say this: The new LR2 is no Defender in this respect, it's a 'portable' pc and I love it (as long as it does not break down )!

I picked up my car two days ago and asked about the price of a new windscreen: It is in excess of $1000 so i would definitely go for the glass coverage!

If one of the 2 (or both) elements in your heated front screen break (i.e. go open circuit) then the worst that will happen is that side of the screen won't defrost/demist. No fault code will be logged and upon a new screen being fitted, it will work immediately without any need for a diagnostic machine.
Once the new HFS has been fitted, you would be well advised to check the operation of both the HFS and the rain/light sensor. With the vehicle in idle after a few minutes, press the HFS button, and you should notice a load change on the engine once it has engaged (60A load). For the rain and light sensor, it's not too difficult to test these functions are working.
Other concerns are making sure the cover around the rear view mirror doesn't get broke (easy to do if you force the clips on it) and the glass sensor that sits on the screen is properly attached. This is only used when the humidity sensor function is added to the vehicle.

Where does the circuit within the screen connect to the circuit on the car ? I've looked but can't see anything.

Has anyone ever had repairs done to a heated screen ? I don't think the circuit is broken, but will need to double check (lets hope for a frosty morning)

Previous experience with heated screens is that it will be need to be replaced if it does not work.....
Should be a waranty claim though

If you've tried the HFS whilst in idle, and cannot either feel any load change on the engine or the screen temperature change (turn blower speed to 1, and put distribution to face to prevent the HVAC system misleading you) then access to the HFS connectors is simple. You will have to remove the wipers (not hard), and then remove the plenum - this is the large plastic part covering the width of the vehicle beneath the wipers. Be careful with the plastic clips etc. You should see the connectors ( 2 pin for each side of screen).
If they are okay, then check your fuses in the engine bay fuse box - the cover should tell you which are for the HFS.

For those Canadian (Albertian) readers who are interested, I finally got my windscreen insurance sorted. I called a few different companies and got similar quotes. It was about $200/year extra for windscreen insurance and the most economical deductable was $500. Most companies give some type of "no-claim" bonus as well. If you make a claim your insurance goes up a bit (in my case %10 increase lasting 3 years). So if I replace my screen in 2 years, it would cost me $400 (2 years of windscreen insurance) + $500 (deductable) + 3*110 (three years of increased premiums) = $1230. This is about the cost of a replacement screen. In other words, I would have to replace my screen every two years for windscreen insurance to make sense. And I'm sure my insurance company would have some nasty surprise in store if I made claims every two years. So no windscreen insurance for me. Now where's the 'fingers crossed' emoticon?

Thanks HC001 - I think the screen is still working, the load definately changes when the screen's switched on. I need to find out if the chips can be repaired, they're only smallish (2 each about 3 mm across in a star shape), but both exactly at eye level directly above the steering wheel.

I'm not sure whether to go with a specialist windscreen replacer or go back to my dealer and have them do it - the difference in cost is negligable - I just want the best job doing. Any experience with either route ?

Anyway, just checked and chips cannot be repaired if they are in the drivers field of vision, so looks like a windscreen replacement. I had to have mine replaced late last year (had to pay £50 excess through insurance) and the company that replaced the screen did a very professional job, and all functions worked correctly afterwards.
