Not an easy story for The Daily Mail to have to report on Shocked

Are there any reports of the factory having to do the same thing in Slovakia? Slovakia might have been a very smart move by JLR, with plenty of capacity to ship large amounts of production out of the U.K. and back into the EU.

I think JLR's 'smart move' would have been made easier no doubt by the EU subsidy of £110 million that was made available to JLR to build the factory in Slovakia! Its crazy that some of our taxes will have been used to create jobs in Slovakia building the Disco/Defender that previously were built in the UK! FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

I can imagine it would have done. We’ve, historically, certainly done extremely well out of EU funding down here in Cornwall, funding which would also have come out of EU wide taxation Thumbs Up

Well done Tigger for mentioning something good from the EU rather that some others who just take something negative and use it out of context as if all EU matters were truly negative for the UK.

Thank you Jimboland Thumbs Up

It’s a little bizarre. On balance, Cornwall has done done very well out of European funding, yet we voted decisively to leave. Our local MP is fiercely behind Brexit, particularly in support of the 1% of the Cornish population that are still employed in fishing but, as a fisherman’s widow, it’s understandable that she might tend towards looking after their interests.

I suppose if we look at it having been very much an emotional decision and taking into account the disproportionate number of retirees in the County, it might not be as surprising a decision as you’d think.

Brexit wont help the fishermen - it wont create more fish. Something else is required.

Unfortunately fishermen are not like farmers and historically have not had to bother much caring about the livestock they catch.
The new technologies of the 20th century turned fishing into a much more efficient process and fish stocks have been wiped out in a few generations as a result. Scant regard was paid by the fishing industry to the future and the effect of methods employed.

Scallop dredging has been likened to burning down a forest to catch a deer.

A successful fishing policy needs to take full control of the fishing areas, and control fishing by either stopping it for periods of significant time or better having no take zones which need to be rigorously enforced.

New Zealand is leading the world on No-Take zones - with resultant increases in fish stocks and bio-diversity.

I doubt though that the politicians will heed the advice of marine scientists and will go with whatever keeps them in power - irrespective of whether we are in the EU or not - it will make no difference to the Cornwall fishermen - there will be no more fish in the sea. Jules

Plenty of fish, in fact the fisherman here throw more away than they are allowed to land, in fact our local fish market/auction has closed in the past few months because of the lack of fish being landed, not caught! F*****g ridiculous. Regards

No fish, a bit like our water management. We do have a drought but we are sucking too much water our of the rivers in the good times so there is none left when there is no rain.

Unfortunately you actually have to have nothing left before there is any chance of everyone waking up to the issue.

Probably because it wasn’t true.

The £110m was not an EU subsidy - it was funds provided by Slovakia to JLR and the involvement of the EU was to determine if the grant aid complied with State Aid rules which deal with competition. Of course the Slovakian grant may have been co-financed from EU funds already granted to Slovakia, but that would have been their choice - it was NOT a subsidy from the EU in addition to what Slovakia was getting anyway under the Structural Funds regime.

I wasn’t commenting on Brexit - I was simply making the point that describing the EU’s State Aid approval of the Slovakian government’s £110m grant to JLR as an ‘EU subsidy’ is simply incorrect. But then it makes for better scaremongering to claim it’s a subsidy. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story!

As well as the subsidy being approved and the new factory approved before Brexit was even a thing...
