Silence is golden

Excuse my total ignorance on anything electronic; but is it possible for the driver to listen to the radio or CD through earplugs such that the passenger is zonked out with a pillow and eyemask, whilst the driver is roaring through France?

Tempted to say no, plus to me it doesn't seem safe to be driving with headphones in. Even with the stereo loud you're more aware of your surroundings than with headphones. Learned to drive in 2011.

A pair of foam ear plugs work wonders too (for the passenger). Used them for years due to a very noisy neighbour. Learned to drive in 2011.

It's illegal to drive in France with earbuds or any other in or over ear device.

Correct me if I'm wrong but being profoundly deaf is not a barrier to driving AFAIK. So as long as you could hear a bit of the outside world I dont see why you couldnt drive legally. Not saying I'd want to do that though. Jules

Another link that says it's illegal to drive with headphones or earplugs in France: https://www.essexlive.news/news/what-law-s...es-1062696

From that link: In 2015, France made it illegal for all drivers, cyclists, and riders to wear devices in their ear capable of emitting sound, such as headphones and Bluetooth. If drivers ignore this they could face a fine of 135 Euros, or loss of three points on their driving licence, which is equivalent to the UK penalty of using a mobile phone, or not wearing a seatbelt.

Freely members; Thanx for all your replies and advice. I'm ahead of some of you. I have worn industrial earplugs for 30 years as my wife has a nasal sleep problem. I buy them in 250 unit boxes from Amazon made by 3M. I also wear them driving on motorways, flying on planes, sitting in noisy public waiting rooms and lounges. As to the French regulations, having completed at least 100 trips through france in the last 50 years; I have never been asked about spare lamps, headlamp reflectors, self breatherlyzers, international driver licence, green cards, etc.
My question was more of a electronic technical nature, and was really interested whether the audio from the insitu radio was accessible through earphones? Like when waiting in hospital car parks, waiting to board the ferry, waiting outside Tescos.. I know that wasn't my original example but I'm asking the technicians out there if it's possible.

Rear seat headphone sockets used to be fitted on early fl2, i think they allowed headphones use with main volume off, not sure if you could retro fit At work

which is why you got the advice you did.

If you meant other circumstances perhaps you should have said.

Plus doing something for ages and not being challenged and it being legal are not the same thing. I wouldn't flaunt laws abroad, personally.

But on a purely hypothetical basis, I still don't think it's possible to have headphones using the cars head unit as the input. Unless you have an audio/entertainment pack that came with headphone sockets (likely for rear passengers) you wouldn't be able to get access to the audio out without connecting stuff up to the amp in the boot as it's all fibre. Learned to drive in 2011.
