Do any of you guys have an electric garage door? Any recommend would be good , also any pitfalls I should look out for? Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

I have a 5.5m wide Horman automatic door. Highly recommend. Weather sealed and double skin with cavity insulation.
Research a reputable company and be sure to get the best quality motor you can.
A handy device is a remote control you can keep in the house which tells you if the door is open or closed. Saves going outside to check. You will forget one day! Derek Hill

Thanks delboy, I’ve watched a lot of videos about horman doors , I’ve no idea what’s a good or bad motor. My garage door is 3.1m wide , you can see it from the kitchen window. I think most come with 2 remotes, one with be kept in the car that’s in the garage and the other will be kept in the kitchen.
I’m going to phone companies today to get someone out for a quote, another concern I have is that it’s a Marley garage we have ie it’s sectional. I don’t know if this effects how it would be installed. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

I have 2 on a double garage, now 8 years old, the company seems to have shut down but was in Norwich and fitted throughout the county, I lived just north of Glasgow when they were fitted but are still working well with my son living there. They are insulated with two remotes and seem to be a common generic system, despite various companies adverts most are generic and the cost has nothing to do with quality, mine were £1600 for two 8' x 8' doors, I would always have a standard front door entrance to the garage so if the breaker trips ( my consumer unit is in the garage) the remote fails or other problem you can access the garage and operate the manual handle, make sure the obstacle detection beam is set as low as possible if the mechanism doesn't stop on pressure. The frame fits on the inside of the opening as an option or but against the opening thus slightly reducing the width.

Thanks dartman, I only have one entrance to my garage, the garage door. I saw on a company’s website that they used a UPS inline in case of power failure. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

That will seriously increase costs and won't help on a motor failure or jam. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Never thought about a motor jam , you can pick up a UPS between £50 & £100. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

I have a Horman Up and Over Electric door fitted by Express Garage Doors , Oakley , Fife
Excellent service and very pleased with the door and its operation
Keep one key in house and one in car to open when entering drive
Have no connection with this Company but pleased to recommend them

The problem with up and over doors is the reduced height, and they tend to jam if manual, possible not if electric due to the mechanism, personally I would go for the roll up, allows access to above the rafters if you have a pitched roof. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I have a 14 foot Horman sectional that was installed in 2008 and never had a problem with it except when the garage consumer unit decide to trip out . Then we realised that although we had a side door it opened inwards and one of the cars was in the way. The situation was resolved by the neighbour's six year old daughter who managed to squeeze in, climb on the work bench and reset the trip. It happened a couple of times and I eventually reversed the door frame so that it opened outwards. The other factor was that judging by her mother, the daughter would eventually definitely not be able to squeeze through small spaces in the future.  3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I've had a Crocodile door for a couple of years now. Pricey but excellent. Full fitting is included in the price so you just sit there and watch them do it. It has a remote activator which you could keep in the car or, as I do, in the hall so the door is half way up before you get to it.

As for up & over doors, I got fed up with replacing the cables every 18 months or so. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

I replaced my door with a made to measure Horman door and I can drive my Freelander with roof box on into the garage no problem , broke key fob last week and picked up new one same day
Well worth the money

Local company came out and measured up on Friday , he called me back the same day with a price . The guy came from Hormann yesterday afternoon, I’m still waiting on the quote.
The first guy is definitely not getting my business.. a bit rag tag & bob tail if you know what I mean. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!
