I’m new to this forum so thanks to anyone who reads this. I’m a puzzled with a strange fault I have on my 2008 Freelander 2.2 diesel. Manual. On Hard acceleration a slight whooshing/sucking noise can be heard. The noise can not be heard when the car isn’t under load so assume it has to be when the turbo kicks in and the boost pressure builds.

Last week on the way to work just as getting on to the motorway the EML came on so I instantly turned round and took it home and borrowed my wife’s FL2. It didn’t go into limp mode, but I had noticed that even before the EML was on the power was not as Oomfy as normal also very very subtly you could feel a slight hesitation at a certain rev. But this only happened a few times. I scanned the car and it had a P0299 Turbo/ Supercharger Underboost. There were some other codes but they may have been old ones as i havnt scanned the car before and have had it a few years.

I have done the following:

About a month or so ago no whooshing noise there was an oil residue on front bumper, this was a leak on the intercooler, so I replaced the intercooler. At the same time replaced the rubber pipe from intercooler up to plastic pipe that then goes to another rubber pipe at the front of engine. Replaced intercooler one with silicone one, and about a year and a half ago the front shirt one was replaced with silicone.

Today I replaced the other two rubber pipes with new silicone ones, so the one that comes from the turbo at back of engine, and the one that goes from the passenger side of intercooler to the metal pipe that then goes up to turbo. I also took off the inlet rubber pipe on turbo that connects to a plastic pipe that goes up as there was oil residue all over this pipe. Cleaned it up and refitted it, as it looked ok and I didn’t have a new one of those.

Put all back together and I still get the same whooshing noise under hard acceleration and power not as oomfy

No Eml came on but I scanned it after my test and the P0299 fault came up.

I’m really stuck for ideas?? Does anyone have any idea?
Would it be helpful to share the first lot of fault codes ?

I wondered, could it be intercooler gone bad, but there are no visible leaks and it was fine as new. I also wondered could there be a leak from air intake manifold? Or would that not do this. Or can egrs leak and cause this. It sounds like an air leak under load.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Turbo pipe work first place to check, had a leak on mine recently, changed the intercooler to induction pipe, all good now.

Typical culprit as people remove or bend it when undoing the oil filter.

Thanks for the fast input.

Today I replaced these rubber pipes with silicone ones: the rubber pipe that goes intercooler to metal pipe to rubber pipe to turbo.

When I did the intercooler about a month ago I did the rubber pipe that goes from the other side of the intercooler and up to a plastic pipe at front of engine. This was replaced with silicone.

A couple of years ago rubber short pipe on from of engine was replaced with silicone.

I checked out these all today too and they seem fine. I didn’t take the short one off at front of engine today, but had a feel couldn’t feel any splits. And no oil residue near it. ?

Any other ideas?

Next areas are the turbo to exhaust gaskets and the top end of the engine.

Has it thrown a code, is there an engine management light on?

Ah ha! That sounds interesting ok I will check those gaskets out where would they be located exactly?

For the top end of the engine, what should I look for?

Last week the EML came on with a P0299 code and there were some other codes, but they maybe could have been old I’m not sure. For reference they were : P061B, P1298, P1402, P1259.

After I changed some of the pipes today, I cleared the codes and after a period of test driving. No EML but still not right. Scanned it and P0299 back.

Just to follow on the below thread, I still couldn’t locate any splits so luckily enough for me I have an excellent Land Rover garage a few units from my work. So I carefully drove it on for them to diagnose. It was a split on the intercooler!! Even though I had replaced that for an updated welded one about 1 and a half months ago.

Annoying but at least I know. The part is in warranty.

I’ll try and include some photos to show the location and the actual split on the weld. As it’s hair like tonight I’ve put some super strong metal weld on there rated at 2500psi aparantly just for a temp fix while I wait for the new intercooler.

Glad its sorted, intercooler holes give a similar effect and only small weaps of oil to show its goosed.

I was a bit worried my turbo was on its way out. Thankfully no.. touch wood. Out of interest do you know how to check the health of my turbo? And if its on its way?

I still can’t believe the intercooler split on the seam but oh well must just be unlucky.

My first thoughts are check codes as they can show limits breaching fo r sensors, second have a boost check and thirdly frequent oil changes as turbo’s like clean oil.

Presumably that’s an aftermarket intercooler? Regards

Just an update on this thread. Yes this is an aftermarket intercooler as my original went on the ends where the plastic is joined to the alumnium so I found this far improved all aluminium one instead. Full pic included at end to see whole intercooler. Typical the weld was bad. Anyway I had the split on the weld tig welded up on Friday.fitted on Saturday and all is now great!! Also did an oil change at the same time.

No new error codes. All seems well and a nice lot of power now. I will keep on the oil changes as always and monitor it to prevent any turbo issues cropping up.
