New Freelander on BMW FAAR Platform?

Autocar this week are reporting that JLR are considering re-introducing a small Land Rover and calling it a Freelander.

Following on from the recent BMW/JLR alliance on Electric Platform Architecture and Engines, JLR are thinking of using BMW's Transverse FAAR Platform to produce a 4.2 to 4.6m Off-Roader based on DC100 and Defender design clues.

This 'New Freelander' will be 'Urban Focused', but still a 'Highly Capable - Compact' Off-Roader', it will be Hybrid-Electric'.

The Platform is currently used by the BMW1 and 2 series and the Mini.

No date is given, but it is needed by 2025 to help JLR meet new CO2 Regulations. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Looking at BMW's plans for the FAAR Platform, I guess that the rear axle of any new Freelander will be electric motor driven from the PHEV battery. That will be a complete change from today's mechanically connected rear axle, and maybe not so good in extreme conditions. But I for one have never had to cope with anything more than a snowy slope or a muddy car park. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Well at least they will finally have got rid of the rear diff issues Rolling with laughter

But being serious for a moment, if it really does have styling along the lines of the new Defender ie a bit boxy in a modern way, it’ll be a very interesting proposition. Regards

Autocar is little different to AutoExpress now; they just make stuff up, knock up some PhotoShop images and then publish it.

It’s fun to read, but I wouldn’t take a single word of this seriously! Rolling Eyes

Personally, I'd rather walk than drive a bloody 'hoover'. 2013 SD4 Dynamic.

Firstly this is absolutely legit!
Secondly, as I said at least 2 or 3 possibly 4 years ago the Freelander name was put on “ICE” whilst JLR repositioned the range and always intended on Keeping the Freelander name just not in the size/market place the L359 was positioned by the then American owned parent company “Ford”.
Remember L359 is based on the EUCD platform so if the “NEW” Freelander is based on a shared platform I’m sure as like L359 it will be extensively customised by JLR. It’s simply not going to be as large. MY15

So are you saying that it will be more like an FL1 in size? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

But the way vehicle models “upsize” effectively every few years the next FL will probably be about the same as the FL2.....or it will miss it’s market segment.

I am sure most customers view the DS as an upgrade/upsize from the FL2. Regards

Better get a shift on as it's a matter of time before someone builds something to fill the gap!! Swmbo has a Kia Soul and if the Koreans added 4 wheel drive, TR etc to that I'd be tempted. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.
