MODS: What is the best mod on your freely?

Hi.

So what’s the best mod on your car, you don’t necessarily need to have done it yourself, just after a list of interesting mods.

on models up to 2012 upgrading the exterior (non Xenon) lighting all round and the interior lighting to LED is good but in particular putting an overhead LED strip into the boot roof wired up the standard boot light is a great help.

guess it all depends on what you use the vehicle for... if like Largered you use it for disappearing on tour for 6 months it could be roof tents, power points, rear spare wheel carriers etc etc or for Lightwater in Australia who goes on trips into the outback its compressors and refrigeration.

then there is the under body protections, lift kits, snorkels etc for those that off road

or like the majority of us it 75% road use with a bit of muddy field/greenlane/farm tracks then maybe its just AT tyres.

That's it Mikey... you've opened the can of worms now

your remap is an Alive one isn't it ? Im assuming its a stage 1 but how much does it cost with them ?
There is guy local to me who does decent remaps for under £200 but they are generic to the make/model/engine and not tailored to the exact car

I've done lot of actual useful stuff for remote outback survival but the best thing now is acoustic insulation which has been great to quieten the car.

The only disadvantage is that acoustic insulation is not bling for the vain Freelander owner!

You don't drive at night in the outback, just too risky, so a headlight upgrade is a waste. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Yes, Stg1 Alive map

Prices vary throughout their dealer network

And they are not generic maps. Generic maps can (and usually to) cause trouble...

I don't live far from Louth where Alive are based.

what are the real world gains of one of their maps Mikey ? I think they ask about £500 for a stage 1

The very best is the swing-a-way spare wheel carrier.

Our SD4 will achieve over 45mpg on a run
Map has already paid for itself in fuel savings

When you have long legs and the seat is back to the limit, the right knee floats and has nothing to rest on and after a while starts aching, so a knee rest which is actually the redundant headrest from an ex A Class Mercedes is my permanent modification.

Also, I find the standard leather bound steering wheel too slippery, so a simple Halfords rubberised cover is more tactile and comfortable.

Electric roof top tent (full double bed) with OzTent annex and N/S awning.

We were over the 500kg payload & we don't have a bullbar, towbar or under body protection. It adds up frighteningly quickly. Upgrading to all terrain tyres added another 18kg. We did a spreadsheet of every last item in the car. Not including food or clothes there was 24kg of items under 1kg. 50kg of items under 2kg.

142kg fully loaded. 50L of fuel & 15.3kg of solar panels we remove as soon as we can for corrugated roads. 100kg on 4 cross bars I believe is ok, but still try to reduce weight up top as much as possible.

Solar controller & custom fridge mounting bracket, bought bracket was far too thick.

Have been able to get up 11.3 amps out of 120 watts of solar panels & 137 watts spraying panels with water to cool them.

Heatsinks added to the front as the front was a bit warm. Latest modification. I didn't space them as they don't stick quite as well to the plastic, so they support each other, 19mm thickness 20 x 20 mm by 9 heatsinks.

A few fridge mods. Also replaced 55cm (110cm + & -) of wiring in the fridge to increase voltage.

Heatsink to make all of fridge cold. Sailcloth repair tape on back to prevent damage to evaporator.

New very efficient fan in fridge.

Roof rack mod for awning bracket, & replaced LR self tapper which fell out on rough roads with bolt & Nyloc nut.

Two 26AH batteries for super efficient fridge, & to charge phones, camera etc. Everything is 12 volt in the car.

Third 26AH battery.

The third battery locks in place & is bolted to the rear seat bolt so it will not fly around the car.

Windscreen sun screens cut to size for every window. Great at night to reduce heat loss. It does get cold down under.

Battery insulation. Heat shortens battery life, but I replace it every 4 years regardless, just too risky 1000km from help. Can jump start from the 3 gel batteries, 280amp for 5 minutes. Car starter motor is 238amps.
