Sky Q Box and Sound Bar

I am hoping some forum members with an interest and experience of Home Cinema Audio Visual may be able to help me.

I recently upgraded my Sky HD+ Box to the Sky Q and also treated myself to a Canton DM60 Soundbox which ranks very highly with all the reviews that I could find

On Blue Ray connected with the Digital Coaxial cable, it sounds fantastic

On Sky (which is connected directly with the Optical Audio Connection) the sound is really disappointing to say the least and in fact is arguably not as good as when using the TV speakers. I have been through all the Sky Troubleshooting and settings, so I am pretty sure that it is all set up correctly

Has anyone come across this before?? or has anyone got any suggestions??

Many thanks Steve

Optical should be fine so that’s a puzzle can you connect it in a different way ?

My SkyQ box is connected by Hdmi to my Yamaha soundbar and sounds good , does your Canton have an Hdmi connection ? I read somewhere that the old Sky HD box didn't like being connected by Hdmi and optical , it was either one or the other . Not sure on the SkyQ box whether it's the same . All my system is connected by Hdmi without any issues , my new 4K bluray player also .The Q remote Will even turn up/ down the soundbar too . Hope you manage to resolve your problem .

I've seen that your soundbase doesn't have an Hdmi input , is your TV a newish model ? I think you may need to feed the sound from your Qbox to your TV then from there to your soundbar via optical , you will probably need to adjust the TV setting . I'll check the settings on my Qbox and see what's possible.

Have you been on the advanced audio visual menu and set the output for Dolby digital via the optical connection? On the audio visual menu it says when dolby digital plus is selected via hdmi the optical output is disabled. If you set hdmi output to dolby digital you should be ok . Your soundbase should have a pretty impressive sound too as it's got subs built in , it should blow your TV out of the water .

Hi Mark. Thank you for your input
As you have noted, the Canton does not have an HDMI input. My TV is 10 year old Panasonic which, when purchased, was a pretty top of the range model and still holds it's own in terms of both picture and sound quality.

The Sky Q is connected to the TV via HDMI
The Sky Q was connected direct to the Canton via the optical audio connection. Last night I tried taking the optical audio from the TV to the Canton, but it didn't seem to improve things much. As you suggest, I think I may return to that setup and have a bit more of a fiddle around with the TV settings (if it has any for audio) to see if I get any joy

Yes, I have been through the Sky Q advanced audio visual menu a few times to make sure it is configured correctly

We are in the middle of watching 3 series of Cardinal and as we are getting it from "catch up", no sub titles are available!! I know that my ears are not quite what they used to be, but in particular, following the dialogue is a real problem!! The sound feels quite "uncontrolled"

Steve

Hope you manage to resolve your issue Steve , post up if you get stuck or fix the sound issue . If it's set correctly in the sound menu it could be an issue with the box , ours is playing up where as the sound will cut out for a split second , and never mind what i do the lip sync never seems right . Once we get back to some normality I'll get Sky out to sort it .

I plugged my Bose Solo 5 direct into the TV via optical, works a treat. No plugging in to Sky Q. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200
