I had same question . Mine just gets road use and I had the rear diff and haldex serviced at about 45000 miles but I don’t know if it was removed from the car. If it was it was quite cheap at my local lr specialist, since I asked them to do it as part of last years annual service and it was very reasonable cost. Not had any problems with this before and after - touch wood.

Could the prop shaft be removed on these models similar to the original freelander to convert to 2wd? Would this hurt anything?

Can't see why not - the FL2 was available as 2WD from new.

I did find that when the front IRD (PTU) unit failed and no drive was transferred to the prop shaft that the front wheels did like to wheel spin when setting off - then again I usually set off with my right foot buried in the carpet.

When the IRD failed there were no faults shown by the system, even when the front wheel was spinning. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

If you disconnect the electrical connection on the haldex unit then the haldex wont ever lock up, leaving you with FWD only. Jules

How would I flush out the gunky stuff from the haldex without having to totally disassemble it?
Prefer to do it on the car if at all possible.

You can't.

But once you have the prop shaft out, that's the hard part done

Its only 4 more bolts to take it out

haldex service done at Bell engineering . been all fine since . great service took haldex out for full clean and pump and new filter clean . also changed my large haldex flange to the smaller type . top work

I read in several threads and other sources as well that a city driven car will generaly gunk up the Haldex far sooner than one used off road. Am I right to think this is because in city driving the Haldex is constantly being engaged and disengaged (when setting off from standstill you always have 4wd) whereas in offroading one would presumably have one of the special programes engaged which effectivly locks up the Haldex, thus no slippage between the clutch plates...?

Also, and sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, would constantly driving in lets say mud/ruts on sealed surfaces have an adverse effect on the drivetrain (windup)? I know the front and back diffs are open and traction is managed via the ABS system but the Haldex (acting as a centre diff) would still be locked. Does it have a windup sensor somwhere slipping the clutch plates when detected? If so i imagine it would just make the matter worse, more slippage -more gunk?
