Diesel in petrol wouldn’t cause any damage as it’s effectively a lubricant but petrol in a common rail Diesel engine would as the petrol would dilute the lubricating properties of the diesel and affect the moving parts of the fuel system, mainly the high pressure fuel pump and the injectors. We have a report on BBC that Tesco (Eastville) Bristol, has water in diesel fuel.
