with fungi, If you rub a bit of the underside on the back of your hand then wait for any reaction. if no reaction then place a very small amount on your tongue (don't swallow) and wait for a reaction. If there is still no reaction then its a fairly safe bet that they are good to cook up for tea.

Other than that, get a book and read up

plots all look great on here, shame im not green fingered Laughing

Did a bit more on the plot today - cleared another couple of beds of dreaded weed but then disaster struck. My two-week old £19.99 Wickes spade gave up. The fork gave up last week. They’re going back tomorrow. I don’t expect top quality for that sort of money (there were two cheaper versions in the store) but I should get more than three outings from them digging a vegetable plot over.

Got my money back for the spade and fork after a small argument at Wickes - they wanted to give me replacements but I said no, no, no! Went round my Mums and she had loads in her garden shed that she is never going to use again (has a gardner in nowdays and he has his own tools). Some even still had the tickets on them and seem better quality (not that that’s hard) than the ones I returned? Lifetime guarantee eh? We'll see!

Today I have mostly been digging and I have a blister on the palm of each hand to prove it!

Have you tried the non-digging method. Some people on my old allotments use it successfully and there is a lot going for it especially no digging.

no till is becoming popular in real farming, skim the top drop seeds in , done.

the trick is to plant sacrificial crops at all 'empty' periods. let the roots do the digging and the coverage preserve moisture in the soil

worms will provide the drainage At work

SteveD:
You're not the only with a broken spade. Mine gave up last week but can't moan as it was a Chinese made one from Trago Mills and cost around £5. It lasted about 10years stored in the open so can't complain. If I buy another one and it lasts as long it could be used to dig my grave. 11 GS Bali Blue

That’s sounds a pretty easy option. I’ll have to look into that. Also, I was looking at seeds today when I bought my garlic bulbs and I saw a pack of something I’ve read about somewhere - green manure. Basically looks like grass as far as I can tell - you sow the seeds, let it grow wild until about three weeks before you want to plant the area when you then just turn it over and it rots down. Anyone used that? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
