3.2 Serpentine Belt Replacement

Freel2,

I wanted to share my experience changing the Serpentine Belt for my 3.2 I6

My mileage is 113,000

Age 10 years

The Belt, Tensioner and Idler were all functioning well but at 10 years it was time

Parts that I replaced

LR004667 AUX Belt tensioner
LR006076 Idler Pulley
LR003570 AUX Belt



A few picture of the fun





















No picture of the bolts for the Power steering pump but those had to come out as well.

Two hidden bolts and a bracket with two more bolts

Challenges

1) I was only able to move the AC compressor slightly out of the way
2) The bolts for the power steering pump pump were hard to get to
3) Removing and installing the tensioner was difficult
4) The spring coupling between the water pump and the power steering pump is very confusing

Thanks for sharing.
Had the idler pully and belt go on me recently and had to be recovered by the RAC to an approved repairer. When I got the bill for £275.60 I nearly chocked !! I told the mechanic , if I had the parts , I'd have done it myself at the side of the road ! He replied that it was a pig of a job and would have struggled.............
From your pics, I'm glad I didn't have to do it myself at the roadside. Would've been too dangerous anyway due to the position of the car.
BTW the Freelander had the engine replaced by Land Rover around 20K ago. Invoice was for £12,000 Shocked I bet they used the ancilllaries from the old engine. Big Cry

I wouldn't want to do this job on the side of the road either.

It took half a day (not rushing at all)


How many miles did your belt fail at?


It is annoying that the manufacturers don't wan't to replace items like these when replacing the engine.

Very short sighted.


Did you find out why the original engine failed?

PS I noticed that my PCV valve was weeping oil, so I just ordered a new valve, i'll start a new thread and post some pictures when I get the part

Great write up Paul,
I replaced mine @ 100k as part of the cam belt replacement/service.

Joe Fix it until it's broke !

It wasn't the actual belt that went, rather the idler pully. The bearings had seized and the plastic wheel melted and disintegrated . The actual belt only showed damage from the way the idler broke apart.
However, if it was the original pully it would have done 114000 by the time the original engine went bang, plus another 20-odd thousand since then.


Did you find out why the original engine failed?

Off my head ISTR it was run low on oil. Strange that after only a few months of my ownership, the oil light came on (new engine of course) and it took a full litre of oil to extinguish it.
I do wonder whether the i6 likes drinking oil !

Thanks for sharing the details.

I am feeling even better about replacing the pulleys now.

When I removed the old pulley I did notice that the bearings were not very smooth.

Perhaps I replaced it just in time.

A healthy belt is no match for a seized pulley.

Thanks for pointing that out.


As for your comment about the 3.2 drinking oil, I've been fortunate that mine doesn't. But I have found some information that substantiates your claim. I'll post a link in a separate thread about my PCV change.

just an update for anyone that reads this thread.

I've done this Job twice now once on my LR2 and once on my S80 and it is likely that I will get to do it at least a second time on both vehicles.

To make the job significantly easier the high pressure connection for the power steering needs to be removed.

Based on what i read on the Volvo forums removing this connection could result in a leak to prevent this I replaced the O-ring

Land Rover has a part number

LR009387 O-ring for Power steering pump

Reassembly tip

Make sure that the end of the spring is secure in the correct location (Green Arrows)

I wasn't careful enough and I assembled the spring so that the end was near the red arrow.

I disassembled the power steering pump and fixed the spring.

One more tip

be sure to reinstall the alignment pin for the power-steering to water-pump connection

Mike,

I installed the Land Rover O ring on my Volvo S80 power steering pump and it fit perfect with no leaks

As for your other comment (it’s not necessary but if you really want to then)

American Heart Association- because of what I do when I’m not turning spanners

Or this site and MVS both accept donations

Craig,

I really like the fact that they designed a Rear End Ancillary Drive R.E.A.D. just like the SI6 3.2 has.

Ok its completely different but it solves the same problem.

I did the same thing, since I couldn't see down there well enough to figure out where it was supposed to go. Had second thoughts later (after driving it) so I took it apart again to check... the spring had snapped into the correct hole. There's a groove around the circumference, that looks like it would feed the end of the spring right into the hole when turning. I'm thinking it may there for that reason?

Mine made a horrible clicking sound.
