Nice bill before Christmas

Put the car in for its MOT this morning at my local Kwik Fit. Always used them as they are open at the weekend and I can get the bus home from them and they have always been good.

But today they called back to say both track rods had excessive play and one side of anti roll bar needs sorted for same reason.

Now, my local indie has closed down and all other local garages are closed but KF can have the parts Monday morning and have the car back up and running later Monday.

Don't have a huge amount of choice but it'll cost £245 for the work. Not ideal and I imagine much more than an indy but I need the car so hey. Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car

Hi mate depends how handy you are with the spanners. Looking at the prices of the parts if you want to use good quality parts they will cost you just over £100.00 that could be as little as 50 odd quid with cheaper stuff not much of a job to do but remember to factor in tracking when its all been done 245 isn't to bad if good quality parts are being used and tracked up after as well

Yeah the bill does include tracking afterwards. Can't comment on the quality of the parts of course. Still a kicker but good to hear it potentially isn't as overpriced as I thought it would be.

As with everything though I dare say I could do it myself given time but the car needs to pass it's MOT and I need to be able to ferry the kids to and from nursery. Learned to drive in 2011.

Unless you have the tools (including a ball joint splitter) and fancy a retest fee plus wheel alignment fee then you don't really have a choice if you need the car every day. Just take the hit and save money at Xmas Dinner by not having so many sprouts. Smile 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Better before Christmas than after! At least you know what is leftover for the silly season rather than blowing the budget! Mine is due end november. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Had I not bought a second extended warranty yes it would have cost many thousands in repairs and I've had it maybe 3 years I think. So out with services and the warranty this is the first repair Ive had to pay for myself, but certainly more than the other cars we've owned, which to be fair were not 4x4s. Learned to drive in 2011.

I thought that LR extended warranty included MOT failure warranty with a £50 excess. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Probably would have, but it never failed an MOT while under extended warranty. I didn't renew it as the renewal was crazy. Kinda backfired that one :-/ Learned to drive in 2011.

My previous 2 cars I had each for 17 years. I noticed that I had a period of high bills due to things needing to be replaced, but after that things got better. I only got rid of the cars in the end as each needed a new round of expensive repairs and it was not worthwhile spending the money on cars of this age. But after the bump in bills they were cheap to maintain. Peugeot 504 & Seat Ibiza. Still using the same mechanic. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Are LR and especially Freelander really that expensive to run and maintain compared with other marques, from a Hyundai forum:-
"The running lights on the offside have failed, at 48000 miles, on my 2014 model. Is this claimable under warranty!
I'm told that it's part of the foglight, and to replace it is £288 + VAT, and the bumper needs to come off to replace it, so about an hour and a half's labour!!" These are probably the the same units fitted to Hyundai and Kia 4x4 models, cars are just expensive to run if you haven't the time to source spares and fit them yourself. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

You're probably right. I'm new to owning older cars so havent ever had to do this sort of wear and tear thing, but I guess it's still a lot less than the monthly payments of a new car. Learned to drive in 2011.
