Scotland 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Indus Silver
Second car

Having a bit of a dilema at the moment with choosing a second practical car to replace the wife's not so practical MX5.

Have a choice between a Jeep Cherokee 2.5L diesel Sport or a Freelander 1 TD4. Both similar price and mileage.

Looking for peoples experience of either car and what they think of them.

Thanks Thumbs Up

It's a nice thought but just a wee bit out of our price range. But if I did, it wouldn't be black Laughing ______________________

A3 Question Question .......no thanks.

Want another 4x4 coz I like em and I don't give a toss about global warming, (which is a figment of our governments imagination).

So the choice in our price bracket is either the cherokee or FL1 both of which are on a 54 plate so I wondered if anyone would care to share their experience of either vehicle if they have owned one or the other.

Guess I'm asking for trouble asking about the Jeep on a Freelander forum, but it's the only forum I am a member of and my chin is big enough to take it Laughing ______________________

Clutches can fail (quite expensivly) on fl1 td4's, mine burnt out its wiper motor in heavy snow, the tailgate handle failed as did the clock spring in the steering wheel. The basic problem with fl1's is the amount of rover parts in them Evil or Very Mad oh and the pretty bad crash test results. Get her the A3 Thumbs Up At work

Jeeps are great if you actually want to go off-road Confused ... the first FL was great if you have a few $$ in your pocket to maintain it Shocked ... but my pick for your situation would be a limited edition (such as the Columbia Edition) previous X-trail Diesel Manual (ok, you can stop swearing now! Rolling Eyes ). I drove one of these aross the Europe and back (3000+ klm) in a week and was never tired, and it av. 7.4lt/100klm - even at German Autobahn speeds! Loads of room in the back, huge sunroof, nice 6 speed gearbox... and you can't break a Nissan! Razz ______________________________

I had an 02 plate FL1 TD4 and never had a single problem with it, economical 37mpg and I think the later face lift models look good too.

I had a 2005 FL1 TD4 before my current FL2. Never had any problems with it at all and would happily have had another, if the FL2 hadn't come along...

I echo what Dick says.

I had a 54 FL1 td4 auto. Best car I have ever owned until I bought the FL2.

I too would have bought another FL1 had the FL2 not arrived.

I used the FL1 in some truly 'off road' situations and it perormed really well, only fault I had was that one day the ash tray would not go back in!

Don't forget that the later models, like mine had the really nice BMW diesel engine.
