It has become apparent that at certain warm ambient temperatures, moving the indicator stalk to select particularly the left hand indicator gives a rather intermittent effect.

I mean mechanically, the stalk still works and stays in position etc but it feels like a bad electrical contact because the relay and bulb stops flashing.

The other night when I had my full beam headlamps on, they too started dropping to dipped beam when I hit a bump in the road.

Is the stalk unit easy to replace?
How much should I expect to pay for such a part? "We're in danger, we've got to get out."

I'd have a look first before buying a replacement part.
Pretty sure the procedure for removing/checking has been covered on here before
Might just need a clean/tweak of the contacts - as it happens when they are warm it sounds like something is expanding enough to break the physical contact between the electrical connectors. No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

Someone with the same issue as my stalk, only mine is intermitent for right hand...
Indeed, probably a bad electrical contact, but I ignore it and when it happens I press a little on the stalk lever at its base and the problem is solved for a while...
Not a solution, but I became a little lazy and didn't find time for it.
I believe (as I didn't tried) that's a matter of removing the upper and lower steering column cowls and then two screws that holds the switch.

I think the part number is LR017767. I am just not sure this part is the same for all model years, could be your FL2 needs another one.

But because you write multiple switches fail (indicator and full beam) I would check the connectors first. Maybe it is just a loose cable is and the switch itself in not broken.

my son had a similar problem with his vehicle. When submitting the vehicle for its MOT the garage failed it on the indicator stalk. he had it replaced. To which his wife shouted "..... that was a waste of money ...... you don't even use indicators" !!!

was it a BMW.......... thought they were an optional extra on them anyway

For a moment I thought I'd sussed out why a lot of Freelander drivers never bother to indicate!


On a serious note, how does the steering column cowling come off?

Last time I did something like this is was on an old Ford Escort Van and the indicator stalk unit was linked to the horn button contacts... Please tell me that's not the case this time... 😀 "We're in danger, we've got to get out."

OK. That's helpful. Looks simple enough.

On a slight tangent, does anyone know why my cruise control doesn't work?
Would it be the button at fault or is it a safeguard within the system preventing it from activating? Obviously this is during normal cruising conditions (i.e at 60mph)

Occasionally it does not:
Switch when indicating to left
operate the flash headlights

Got in the other day to see a "Lights On" message on dash when I unlocked - jiggling switch got rid of it

You could try squirting some switch cleaner in it.

Must be the most thankless task in the world fitting indicators to them.

Right - braved the elements and checked the indicator stalk and switch

To dismantle:
Remove the single screw holding the bottom of the steering cowl in place - it is set into a large obvious recess slightly to the left underside of the cowl as you sit in the car - you will need a T20 hex key to remove the short threaded screw
Release the steering column height and angle lock (lever) and pull out towards you and down for ease of access
Separate the top and bottom of the plastic cowl by pulling them gently apart (just clip together)
I did not completely remove either section of cowling I left the top leaning against the speedo cowling and pulled the bottom section just clear of the indicator stalk
You will see two screws (small head philips) which hold the indicator switch unit in place undo and remove being careful not to drop into the cowling
Grasp the indicator stalk and pull gently towards the passenger side
The whole stalk/switch unit will slide out and disconnect from a fixed connector on the steering column
Lift away and the switch and stalk can be examined
I could not see any obvious fault and was reluctant to mess with the circuit board that you can see so I blew it through with compressed air followed by Maplin electrical contact solvent which evaporates away leaving surfaces clean and dry
I worked the switches a few times to check for any obstructions or problems but all seemed well so then re-fitted
As they say in all the workshop manuals re-fitting is the reverse of dismantling
Don't forget to re-position steering wheel at the desired angle and length
A quick easy job which I hope has cured the intermittent problems I have been experiencing (see earlier post) No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS
