Having seen Top Gear the other night where they have to drive from Switzerland to Blackpool on a tank. Did you notice that they all get to 0 on their range gauges but still keep going. The Jag apparently managed something like 100 miles after it said 0 and apparently still had 140 miles worth of diesel in the tank!

I assume that these cars also get if they run out much like ours. The question is, just how far after you hit 0 on the range have you had the guts to go, or actually gone before the engine cuts itself out to stop damage?

Personally the lowest I ever took it was 20ish miles to go..

If it will do another 100 after 0, I'll be impressed! 09MY FL2 Td4 XS, Style Pack, Privacy Glass, Martinique Blue.. oh so very blue..

Just today I went 12 miles past zero, buoyed on by the Top Gear prog. If i hadn't had arcturus junior with me i would have pushed it further but when your 15 yo daughter gives you the evil eye and says 'That's enough', you obey.

Admittedly the last 20 miles were done in 'James May' mode.

Top tip for when you're running out of diesel, is to select Mud & Ruts mode.

I had 10 miles left on the read out one night, put it in M&R so I drove very carefully, and didn't floor it, worked perfectly, and did the 10 mile trip home with out dropping below 10 miles.

When I've tried it since then, I can get way better fuel economy around town in M&R, as I can't floor it from every round about and junction

If memory serves me well car will go into reduced performance mode well before you actualy run dry as a safety measure,think its 50mls worth of fuel left in tank,but dont quote me!!!!!!!

Good question, I think I have a fairly good record for economy achievements, with the FL2 and with many cars before it. The best I've done in the FL2 is 656 miles with an indicated 15 miles to go, that was the point I chickened out! Even if there was a lot more left than the guage indicated I don't think I'd have made the 750(?) miles of the Top Gear journey. The fill up at 656 miles worked out to just over 44mpg.

Previous 'high' achievement was with Peugeot 406 HDI where my best was 975 miles on tank and several tanks at 950+; but I never quite made the 1000 miles, that would have been good. Given the apparent margins built in to the 'range' caculations maybe I could have made the 1000 miles, I'll never know !!!

Maybe I'll get another chance in future, at present next car is likely to be a Fiesta 'econotec' or whatever they call it!!! Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor ... but not any more ... ... psst look at my gallery!

to run his car down to -20 miles and then have a peek in the fuel tank to see how much is left just like clarkesons garage did

When i ran my motor to 656 miles, there was 15miles remaining on the computer.

BUT when I filled it I got 69litres into a 70 litre tank ... so not much left.

Plus a complication on the FL2 is tha the tanks 'straddles' the transmission so there are two low points .... Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor ... but not any more ... ... psst look at my gallery!

That’s the sort of thing my wife does - she believes everything she reads, just like Clarkson and co . Running the fuel so low on any car is not recommended because of the chance of sucking any foreign bodies ( ) in the fuel tank, into the injection system where it can cause damage. I would say that this visual function would be useful in an emergency only and not as a regular of fun thing to play with  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Run your tank down to empty as often as you can so the dirt doesn't build up in your tank, let the fuel filter catch it all as this gets replaced at service time. At work

I ran mine down to about 2 miles below zero when late for an appointment, started it up when I returned from my meeting and it cut out when reversing out of the parking bay...!! I restarted it and it got me the 3 miles I need to get to Shell!!

Not recommended an ex years ago destroyed her engine through running out so often!!
