Hi guys,
I am going to have to remove the fuel filter to get at the alternator cable (small blue one) and was looking for some advice on how to do it.

Can you just refit it and the engine will start (as long as I don't drain the filter of diesel)

What is the best way of blanking the pipes and filter to make sure I don't loose too much diesel

How to bleed it if necessary

hi, you will need a Rubber Pump - Hand Primer Bulb pump , they are less than a tenner in the uk

you then connect this to one of the the fuel lines to prime the circuit ( from memory its the front right line)

if you dont do this the car wont start

Hi Clive, I've just removed my fuel filter to change the manifold and can tell you that only a little fuel comes out but if you catch it with a rag then elevate the ends slightly it stops. Leave the filter full of fuel and the car starts as per normal on reassembly. Not even a stutter. Changing the filter is another matter and I agree priming is a good idea in that case. just in case I have bought a suction ball but I think that I should be able to avoid using it if I do as you said, I will let you know.
I just hope the blue wire from the alternator really is the reason for my battery light being on

As promised the final update for this saga:

Fuel filter removed (care taken not to loose too much diesel)

Blue wire repaired

Fuel filter replaced and car started and ran with no problems

Great news. Only just seen your post so a bit late with this.

If I was to do that repair I would worry (if fuel filter was old) that on moving the old fuel filter it may release muck, so for the small cost I would add a new filter to the whole job. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

thanks for the comment but fuel filter was replaced at the beginning of the year and if the movements of removing it were to cause loose particles then the bumps I ride over would loosen them also. I think if you are carefull its ok but if you drop it you have a problem...
