BCM/ICU

Hi can anyone tell me if it is possible to fit and re-code a second hand BCM or ICU.

Thanks

Short answer is Yes BUT the only way to get it done would be through LR as there is security protocols that need to be followed as the BCM/ECU is closely linked to the IPC and in later models the PCM as backup master copies of the CCF are kept.
It's a highly secured module which is Vin Locked and will not function in another car if swapped out. MY15

Cheers Stuart!

Been on the phone to three dealers today and all claiming that it cannot be done, looks like I will be biting the bullet and forking out the £1000 for a new one with programming. Gutted is an understatement.

Thanks all the same.

But why do you need a new BCU?
The BCU has two main boards. The logic and the power. Rarely the logic fails and the problem is generally on the power side, which can be easily fixed.

The steering lock warning and the lock is stuck.

I have power down the signal wire from the ICU, to the BCU Pin 71 and no power out of Pin 27 going to the steering column lock.

So the two halts you are on about logic I assume is the CAN and other data from sensors and power is the one with all the soldiered in relays ect?

So are the any specialist you know of that would deal with ECU repair?

Many thanks

Did on pin71 of BCU, when you insert the key, appear a pulse of 12V for a short period of time?

Did you disconnected the pin71 of BCU and supply pin71 with 12V in order to see if the relay inside BCU is clicking and supply you with 12V on pin76?

Did you tried to disconnect pin76 of BCU and feed the steering lock directly with 12V to see if it's working?

Did you tried to disable the steering lock from Car Configuration File (CCF) and see if the car is starting?
You can mechanically disable the lock and instruct the car through CCF to not use the lock and then the car will start without it and it will not show you anymore the message.

Yes there is a pulse for a few seconds not long at all. I haven't yet put a supply to pin 71 and listened for the relay working but will get better n the case tomorrow. Will send feed to the steering lock tomorrow as well.

I have nothing to access the CCF as my diagnostic scanner I'm using is a autoboss v30 elite not the best but good enough to get by with. Any recommendations on software and lead to purchase? I have used dealer specific systems when I used to fix HGV's but not a clue where to start on buying a universal system?

If there is a pulse on pin71, then you must see if there is the same pulse on the pin76.
If not, then the relay inside CJB is at fault. And it's easy to dismantle and replace.
If yes, then you should focus only on the steering locking module, as the CJB is OK.

Double checked this morning and it was no pulse from instrument cluster and when sent 12v down the wire power was arriving at the steering lock actuator. However the motor inside the steering lock was inop.

So I am left with the following questions.......

Is there anything that will stop the instrument cluster giving out the pulse? Or is the pulse generated by the ICU as soon as the key is inserted?

what does the key docking station appear as on wiring diagrams as?

Would a fault in the system stop the ICU sending a pulse?

There is an exchange of information on CAN-bus between the BCM and the ICU. Then, if all is OK, the ICU will provide the power (for a period of time) needed by the steering lock module.
In this period of time, the BCM will send the unlock command, the lock will unlock and send back the status.
Then, if all is OK, the ICU will disconnect the power.

Strange that the ICU will not send that power pulse...
Is the key kept inside the docking during all these processes? Or it is ejected automatically after a few moments?

Ok I have managed to get my scanner communication sorted and pulled some codes, I have the following codes that won't clear.......

ECM
P1259 - immobiliser to power control module signal error

ABS
U0136 - lost communication with differential control module

ICU
U0208 - lost communication with seat control module A

BCM
U0136 - lost communication with differential control module

ATCM
U0136 - lost communication with differential control module

The code for the steering lock along with start control unit code were present however cleared.

The key get retained in the docking station throughout testing.

Looks like tomorrow will be spent looking into the differential module control codes.

I believe that the first error, the immo one, is the one that won't allow you to unlock the steering and start the car...
After you press the start button, the led on the ICU stays on for about 1 second and then goes off?

Continues to flash. Have you heard of problems with keys losing the coding after battery's being low? It was never fully depleted but has been on the low side?

No. The keys are stored in the BCM on a non-volatile memory.
If the led doesn't light continuously 1 second - after the key is inserted and pressing start - and keeps flashing, there is something with the immo process... It happens with both keys?

Now, if I am thinking back, all those errors could suggest a problem on the high speed can-bus, where all modules - BCM, engine ECU and differential modules - are all connected.
The immo process needs a communication between BCM and engine ECU and that error suggests that the communication is failing.

With the battery fully charged the only faults that won't clear are the cons between diff control module so looking into that now. Once I have been under and checked the module for diff I'm away to give the BCM plugs a good clean out. Failing that will be looking into the CAN BUS wiring.

You ever found much troubled areas in the wiring?
