EGR or no EGR

hi all, i bought my freelander 2 privately so i have no landrover backup but then I am not paying for that backup.

Anyhow I thought I would get to know the car and look at some of the known issues, last weekend I changed the fuel filter this week I decided to look at the rubber pipes that feed the dpf pressure sensor,

As you can guess I do my own servicing,

The two pipes that are easy to get at looked fine, the top two looked split, I replaced all four pipes,

Firstly thank you to the landrover designers for putting the pressure sensor in the most inaccessible place, as cars get older these items are going to fail and will need changing, what a bunch of clowns.

Secondly I had to remove the lower inter cooler hose to get to the dpf pressure sensor, this did have a slight oil residue inside, is this oil there because of the egr or am I wrong, Will the oil do any harm to the turbo or not.

Would you blank the egr, on my freelander 1 td4 ( going back 8 years) I blanked the egr and it made no difference.

Always bearing in mind that the egr is there to reduce emissions and kill fewer people...
In my experience there will be no difference IF the egr is working correctly. However they have a tendency to stick open, and this can lead to a dramatic decrease in performance. If your egr is stuck, then blanking will make a big difference. I fitted a blanking plate on my TD5 Disco when the performance seemed to have deteriorated significantly, and it instantly solved the problem. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

If you do a search you should find that there is a difference when it comes to EGR blanking.

Older (pre 2011?) you can fit a blanking plate with no issues, later cars it is less strait forward - you may need a blanking plate with a bleed hole. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Hi, I can fully appreciate your sentiment on emissions thats why I didn't buy a TD5 even thought I think they are a really nice machine, also my partner says that 20mpg is f-ing crazy,

But my question to you is this, if maggies lot decide to change the road tax rules so all car owners have to pay duty based on emissions what will you do, pay the £500 + for road tax per year or scrap it and buy a fiesta 1.0, or get a dpf fitted retrospectively.

Not sure what you're asking there - I no longer have the TD5 (exported to France where they don't care about things like emissions). Road tax is based on the emissions of the TYPE of car, not individual, so if your car is supposed to have an egr that's what tax is based on, and if your car was registered before emissions were tested then they can't tax it on the basis of emissions. More to the point, if you blank your egr or remove your pdf, the car may be illegal, fail future mot, etc. If they find a way to test whether your egr is working, and it fails as a result, that would be a maintenance issue and down to you to sort out. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
