I am looking after my daughter's dog at the moment, a 4 year old shih tzu bitch.

I have just let her out into the back garden where she done a poo, and promptly started to eat it !!

any comments/ideas on this unpleasant scenario and how to stop it ?

mine always used to eat Horse dropping when she was a pup, she would make a bee line for it ahead of me and start munching down on it. I used to tell her off everytime I caught her doing it and put her on the lead for the rest of the walk (which she hated) didn't take long and she stopped completely. She does occasionally still try it on but very rarely, maybe 1 or 2 times in the past year. Its all about telling them off, when you catch them doing it as there is no point an hour down the line.

Has she been wormed recently ? recommendations now are to worm every month due to the different types of worms out there (or in there depending on how you think about it )

My dog eats horse , some cow , fox , cat , deer and favourite of all rabbit ........but thank goodness, not dog or her own!! However my understanding is that it is not uncommon.

I think that the theory is that cats and dogs don't have a very efficient digestive system and there is actually quite a lot of nutrition still available. I have just accepted that it is what is going to happen, but I don't like it

I do wish that the dogs that people bring to my garden to would eat it up as the owners certainly dont pick it up! Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

My springer has always liked eating other dogs poo. Disgusting habit but he seems as fit as a fiddle. He's wormed regularly as well which I think is the biggest concern (apart from the thought of him licking you afterwards).

His must annoying habit though is on a morning when in typical springer fashion he goes mental to see you he then proceeds to lie down and start giving his arse a good old lick. The noise he produces as he eat my Kellogs Cornflakes is very off putting

ps apart from this disgusting habit she is a really good dog otherwise.

Having been puppy walkers for Guide Dogs for the Blind and having a new pup every 12 to 14 months for the past 20 odd years we have seen this quite a few times the condition is called Coprophagia the Guide Dog remedy is to initially put the pup onto a less nutritional diet and if that fails putting Pineapple pieces into the dogs food often works obviously this is only good for dogs that eat their own mess.

Don't know if this helps but I saw it in the Duty Free shop (?) on the Isle of Wight Ferry yesterday.
