Therein lies the difference between military and civilian!
In my world much effort goes into refraining from calling guns "weapons" as the word weapon is widely perceived and understood to refer to something that is used or intended to be used to attack, harm or kill people. In the military that is what guns are, in civvy Street they have a different purpose, amongst law abiding folk anyway.
