Unfortunately I think my Ptu is on it’s way out. It has developed a bearing noise.
Does anybody know if the subframe needs to be removed in order for the Ptu to be removed or will it come out with the subframe in place?

No need to remove the subframe, just the RH side drive shaft needs removing, then the PTU simply unbolts from the gearbox. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I'm in a similar position, I've lost 4wd and suspect the splines are worn on the PTU, so need to remove to inspect.

I've got new shocks and drop links for the front and will probably get new wishbones or at least bushes whilst I'm there. Most of this needs disconnecting anyway to get the drive shaft out.

Once all that is out of the way, the prop shaft then needs removing and then finally should be able to remove the PTU.

If you start to do it please post photos etc as you go as there isn't a huge amount of information, so would be great to see how you get on.

Why take off the propshaft?
Fairly sure that I unbolted it from the PTU and just levered it back enough to clear the flange Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

As above. No need to remove the propshaft, it just moves out the way.
Make sure you replace the propshaft flange bolts though, as they're a disposable item, although a dab of loctite will stop them coming undone. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

That's good to know with the prop shaft.

So does it go like this then...?

Loosen wheel nuts.
Jack up front end.
Remove off side front wheel.
Remove drop link.
Undo pinch bolt holding hub carrier on strut.
Use screw driver to wedge open the hub carrier.
Remove hub carrier from strut.
Remove drive shaft bearing mount.
Remove drive shaft.
Undo propshaft from PTU.
Unbolt PTU
Remove PTU


Does that all sound correct? Anything I've missed out?

If you are replacing the the strut I would advise disconnecting
Roll bar link
Drive shaft bolt
Removing brake caliper
Track rod end
Bottom ball joint
Abs sensor wire
Drive shaft from hub
Then remove the strut with the steering knuckle attached as it will be a lot easier to separate when off the car.

And for the Ptu you will need to remove the drive shaft and it’s bearing carrier from the back of the engine.
The prop shaft can stay on the car but I unbolted the center mount because mine was stuck to the pto flange and it helped get it off.

Recently i noticed that my PTU is making a horrible noise, so decided to replace it.
I ve got some companies which refurbishing these components and one of them is the KJ Parts in London.
Would be interested to know if anyone of you have got any touch with them in the past, so could may be tell some experience about their services, like what quality component they supply.

I'd only trust Bell Engineering https://www.bellengineering.co.uk/shop, as they've been doing rebuilds on these items for years, and even offer new spline versions.  Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

I 've used bellengineering.co.uk , a few years back, to replace the rear diff and they did a great job. Unfortunately they dont ship to EU anymore as I found out.
The PTU failed last year and had one from https://www.freelanderspecialist.com/ Again everything worked well.
In any case I would suggest to get a resplined PTU.
