Transmission whining

I've driven the wife's 2011 facelift FL2 today and noticed a whine that is related to engine speed.

The whine is not present for the first couple of miles from cold, but becomes noticeable quickly. It can only be described as an electric motor type of whine. It gets louder with harder acceleration and is present on overrun as well.

I've tried revving the engine whilst the bonnet is up, I can't hear anything that resembles the noise when stationary therefore I suspect transmission.

The car has covered 34k and tows occasionally.

Any ideas as to what it could be would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Check around inside of wheels first. I recently had a strange noise which turned out to be a 10 inch twig stuck inside rear wheel. Other than that could be diff. 2014 SE Loire Blue SD4 Auto (MY15)

Diff?

Are you suggesting front or rear?

I think the noise comes from the front/centre area....but could be wrong

Are there any specific issues related to transmission?

It could be the transfer box in that area. the front diff is part of the gear box which is also a possibility. Both diff and trans box are level with your feet in a forward position, the trans box is in the middle, diff to the left.

I think it's going to my local LR independent for an inspection later this week....

Tyres are Pirelli Scorpion 235/40/19, all 4 have approx 4mm of tread left with even wear all round. I would have expected that if tyres/wheels were at fault the whine would relate to rotational speed not engine speed...

Well, I tried talking to Cavendish Motors in Chesterfield today.

I was asked to call back later, after lunch when I could talk to a mechanic to diagnose. Called back later, sorry we're to busy to talk, can you call back at 10.00 tomorrow?

What's happened to customer service these days...? I might have to travel further but they will not be getting anymore work if they can't be arsed to even talk.

Any recommendations in the Derbyshire area?

The steering reservoir problem only showed up on mine when the steering wheel was turned, when travelling in a straight line it was quiet. However it is something you can check with the bonnet up and engine going whilst stationary. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Could well be the aux belt tensioner. Or something like the water pump or alternator that's driven off that belt (not sure if the water pump is on this engine). The belt tensioner went on my MY07 and it made the sort of whine you describe. If it changes with ENGINE speed rather than road speed it won't be transmission or tyre related, unless it's to do with gearbox input/clutch. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

My Freelander had a speed related whine and occasionally when in traffic it turned out be coming from the air-condition pump as the gas was low. If you have the air con turned on auto switch it off to see if the noise stops.

Whistle I still get the odd speed related whine which comes from the wife.

try Colemans garage, opposite East Midlands Designer Outlet just off J28 of the M1 towards Mansfield. Matt there is very good and has a good team. Thorough and honest.
