Just registered to the forum, and I've got a problem.
I have just changed the front brake pads on my Freelander 2 diesel which all went well, and the peddle firmed up after a couple of pumps, however when I went to drive it I noticed, if I kept pressing on the brake peddle it crept all the way down to the floor ! a couple of pumps and it came up but only to creep back down. I have read some where that when you press back the piston you can push fluid back passed the master cylinder seals, also something about the high pressure hydraulic system linked to the hydraulic control unit needing reset by L/R dealer.
has anyone had this problem and know the solution.

there isn't a drop in fluid level or indication of leaks. bled front 2 calipers to no avail

Could be a leak or air in the system.

The brake hydraulics are conventional & do not need any reset by the dealer. I presume the fault is there with engine on or off. If you have no leaks and are not losing fluid, your symptoms appear to indicate the piston seals in the brake master cylinder have failed. Not a common fault on the forum though.

I have changed several FL2 sets of front and rear pads and I don't usually bother to bleed the excess fluid off through the bleed nipple. I know that a lot of people push the pistons back quickly with a g clamp but I tend to do it by hand pressure alone and I have never had a problem. Any excess fluid I take out of the reservoir with a hypodermic. Did you undo the bleed nipples and perhaps get air in? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It is possible with dual circuit braking systems if youre a bit too fierce on the pedal when bleeding or pushing back a piston say to decentralise the shuttle between the two systems and this upsets the braking balance?

I have never bled the brakes after a pad change, I just use a big pair of grips wit ehe cap off on the resevoir, keeping an eye on the level so it doesnt overflow.. I think if you dont need to break into a system then dont, same goes for the fuel system etc.. I''ve never had a problem with a master cylinder..

When you bleed brakes you should aleways start at the furthest wheel from the resevoir and work your way toward it. i.e if your resevoir is infront of the driver (RHD) then you start at the NSR then OSR then NSF then OSF. If you just bled the front calipers there is probably still air in the rest of the system..

I would suggest you bleed the brakes as above, get someone to help you, or get it to a garage and have them pressure bleed it or back bleed it, they're are the most effective methouds.

talked to a couple of independant L/R garages to day one had solution but the other had come across what he called this quirk ! before . told me to try it with engine turned off push down to see if it carriies on creeping , it didn't but when i started the engine it went straight to the floor ! is this normal ? he said if it didn't creep when not running the brakes were fine, but bring it in for a look. I have 35 years experience of machanicing and have always done al my own work, but this has me stumped .

I didn't undo the bleed nippes initially just gentle pushed back the pistons with a screw driver as a lever , only decided to bleed it after i found i had a problem.

Always hate it when a question doesn't have a conclusion, so just to conclude, I took the FR 2 for a drive and fully tested the brakes and they was no problem all work fine, but it still creeps when sat on drive pushing the peddle down, which it probably always did.

My RRS did exactly the same. I took it into the dealers and the chief mechanic tested it out. Apparently this is quite normal for a servo assisted brake system, and as long as when you turn the engine off it is rock solid it's all good.

It's quite common on cars with ABS. Happens quite often during MOT tests. Quite normal. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Yep, same on my MY13. Never had any brake related work done to the car and can push the pedal to the floor at traffic lights.

Pedal feels fine during normal operation. I think i even got a warning on the dash when it went to the floor!
