England 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 Sport Auto Barolo Black
New battery but which one

I'm looking at fitting a new battery ready for winter and wanted to know if a type 110 battery ( slightly longer ) and heavy duty will fit or has it got to be a type 096 battery (standard size). Thanks .

I always fit the bosch 110 as it has a much higher cold cranking amps and is cheaper from euro parts if you click and collect. Thumbs Up

I fitted a 110 no problem. But yes make sure it is the right type. If you have a start/stop model you need an AGM battery. Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

I have a spare Battery, Exide EA 852

bought it and fitted it for a few months then sold the car so put back the old battery which I still had in the garage

Found it a great battery, did what to said it would do Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Hi Npinks,

Just bought and fitted the same battery.

I noticed the vent tube hole is on the opposite end to the one I took out so the overflow tube no longer fits through the hole in the battery box. There appeared to be a hole with a black plastic plug in the correct end but not sure if this is designed to be removed and switched to the other side or if I just need to make do with the overflow being at the other end.

Did you swap these around or leave as is?

If it's the same spec of battery there shouldn't be a need to re-program the ECU. If you was to change the battery for example from a lead acid to an AGM battery then the ECU would need re-programming to ensure the battery receives the proper charge from the alternator. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Thanks for that Stevie.

I intend replacing the AGM fitted with another AGM, of equal or similar spec. I thought it'd be a straight swap, but our local national orange coloured parts supplier insisted it would need an ECU update. Which they would do, if I paid only £25 for them to fit!

Did sound a little strange, as I'd have thought the battery voltage sensor would register the new battery's voltage.

I swapped my AGM battery last year. I bought the battery from a local family run tyre/battery garage. To be fair to them they didn't know if the ECU would require programming or not. The garage phoned Varta who said it was recommended that the ECU is re-programmed. Anyway I fitted the battery and it has worked fine. There is an work shop manual for the freelander that says that the ECU should be programmed but if not then the system will reset itself, may take 48 hours to do this.

The battery garage told me that AGM batteries were causing them issues as some cars definately require the ECU to be reprogrammed, other cars don't. The guy at the garage told me his Citroen needed a new AGM battery and even though he sold batteries he was going to Citroen for them to supply and fit him a new battery!! Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Lead acid batteries are charged with different voltages to AGM batteries. Hence if you change the car battery to a different battery type then the output from the alternator needs to be changed, this is why the ECU needs reprogramming. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
