United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Orkney Grey
Auto box jolt

Its been a while since I posted on here. Been busy sorting my Disco 2 which I bought last November, so spending too much time on D2 Boys forum! Taken me 10 months but she is now running sweet!

Poor Freelander has been neglected so has now thrown her toys out the pram! Have had a rumbling noise in drive train for a while, initially thought it was just the GG AT tyres but it has steadily got worse. Following 48K service, dealer diagnosed rear bearing. 3 weeks later they replaced it, not surprisingly that was not the culprit, could have told them that but they know best! They now think it is the PTU box, so it is booked in next week to replace this, hopefully they are getting closer.

Anyway my question is: For a long time the autobox will make a violent jolt in the drive train as if you have been hit from behind. It happens when in drive but stationary held on brakes. Take foot of brake and then you get the jolt as if there is some slack in the drive which has been taken up creating momentum. The effect is worse with a trailer on the back or if off road, but generally level ground. Can also get the same effect if you move the gearshift lever from N to D with foot on brakes.

Do other autobox drivers also get this jolt when moving lever into drive?

Sorry for the ramble, but wanted to get other views before taking it into the garage next week. 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

Yes, I have this jolt on occasions, I just say " bl**dy hell Florry" and carry on, will mention it at next service but I suspect it's one of the nuances of such a complicated machine.

Go to the dealer and get your autobox software updated.
If you have a MY2013, as your profile states, you have the "auto neutral" function implemented.
Well, not so successful implemented... So get it properly. Laughing
Many discussion on this on the Russian forum.

Auto-neutral = the box selects Neutral, even if in Drive, if stationary.

Yes, I know, mostly it behaves but you can provoke it, as you come to a stop, or rather just before you stop, ease off the brake and roll gently, the box will then slam it in first with a neck jarring jolt Laughing

As mine is an ex Land Rover car you would think it had been done, I will ask next time Whistle

63 plate auto - has exactly the same jolt - very noticeable. Is it a 'just drop it in to a dealer and get it fixed under warranty' type thing?

Thanks Alex.
Just the sort of info I was hoping for. Another case of too much software intervention. Next challenge will be to get the dealer to take it seriously and admit that it needs to be sorted and not just a 'characteristic'! At least a software change for the gearbox shouldn't be too demanding for them.

Wonder how many others are driving around with this annoying 'characteristic'? 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

I have a MY14 SD4 auto. I do not have the jolt but the box does not shift into 'auto neutral' if in drive and being held on the brakes. This is evident as when I pop it forward into N, I can hear the engine 'unload', and when putting back into D I can hear it load up again.

I am assuming I should also be looking for a gearbox software upgrade?

Thanks,
Mark

To clear up things, it's about LTB00782, since May, 2015....

You're welcome.
Sorry for the bad translation, but you've got the idea...
Didn't find the English LTB so the post is of a Google's Russian-English translation...

After moving/rolling, you need to be stationary, in "D", with the foot on the brake for about 10 seconds and only then the box will autoselect "N".

Thanks, I will give it a try but I am sure I have had my foot on the brake for longer than 10secs (or there abouts).

Just out of interest (and what may explain it), does this only work when in D or does it also work in S and Command Shift? I only ever really drive with Command Shift.

I believe it works only in normal Drive (and maybe in Sport, as it's a particular case of Drive, without user intervention)....
But I can't be sure as I don't have the feature... mine is MY2009.
