Steering lock jammed

Steering lock jammed and engine would not start, I jacked up front wheels, rocked them and freed the lock.
The engine will not start, message on dash ( Steering Locked ).
Any idea's lads, apart from burning the heap where it sits, Iv'e already thought of that.
Regards Paul

Hi SYFL2.
I did that twice and all the remedies' on the forum.
I replaced the throttle body recently and the drivers door lock has just failed. There's a buzzing sound coming from under the front passenger seat and engine area.
Paul.

It's possible to disable the steering lock with IDS/SDD in the Car Configuration File, I guess also with a Nanocom or AutoEnginuity system.

If you know an indy with such equipment they could do this for you. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

That happened to me a few months ago in Sainsburys car park. I was all ready to call the RAC out and was wondering how they would get it on a trailer to remove it when I tried the gear-lever to see if it would come out of park as the steering was on full lock. Anyway, I wiggled the gear lever and ...click.. the steering released - I might have also wiggled the wheel at the same time with the ignition on, I cant remember exactly but I do remember hearing the satisfying click and the rest of the dash lighting up. Foot on brake, press the button and I was away. Hasn't done it since so I think I may have shut down too quick and not quite had it in park. I hope yours is as easy. Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a while?

If your steering wheel is just in the right position the steering lock will bind on its slot it goes into on the column, so you put the key in the solenoid doesnt have enough force to pull it out and disengage the lock .
By just pulling round on the steering wheel as you reinsert the key fob will allow the lock to release, this is what normally causes the initial fault message the steering is still locked??

Hi Lad's, an update.
I have had two auto electrician's check it to no avail. It sits dead on the drive.
The physical steering lock is off but a message on dash states ( Steering Colum Locked ) and the engine will not start.
Both the electrician's went through all the programs on their lap tops. One of them contacted JLR support, they were not interested. Many thanks JLR.
Last night I disconnected and charged the battery, refitted it this morning. Still the same.
Now arranging recovery to dealership. The earliest they will look at it is 20th Aug. Wonderful.
Happy motoring Paul.

Could you remove the covers on the column and have a shufftie at the lock itself, see if anything is slack, tap it etc, maybe the locks released enough to turn the wheel but not released enough to actuate the electrical signal??

But still if its off to the dealers they will sort it, they will probably Oh you just need to do this, easy, that £150 please. Rolling Eyes

Yes thanks, just had the RAC chap call. He was fiddling a long time with the column and run all the test with his lap top.
Still no luck. Waiting for recovery now.
Just a point of subject.
When we towed it out the field and down a track I was amazed just how much force I had to apply to the foot brake. On one occasion using both feet to avoid running into the tractor and it is not a steep track.

That sounds like you have a malfunction in the brake servo assist. Could be the vacuum pump or a leaking pipe/fitting. Confirmation test: After being parked for a while put your foot on the brake before you crank the engine, the pedal should go down a little as the assist comes in from the engine starting. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

Hi The engine has been dead for two days and we have been on and off the foot brake many times. We moved it with an empty servo tank. Thumbs Up
The reason I mentioned it is wife drove the tractor and I the car. If she had been in the car I don't think she would have had the leg strength to stop the thing. The front of the FL2 would now look different.
Just a warning to anyone else in a similar situation.
