2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black
Black smoke

Hi folks

Recently, the last month or so, my car has started to smoke when accelerating, thick black smoke. I know there are a few threads on here about this issue but my query is if it was due to a faulty EGR or MAF or any other sensor that could cause it would you expect there to be any error codes? I checked last night and there are no fault codes standing or pending. I will check the air filter and order a new fuel filter but if its not that then without error codes is it a case of changing parts till it stops? 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE

Try dosing it with injector cleaner - might clear up the soot your are seeing from poor combustion. Too early to start worrying about major disasters yet! Td4 XS manual, Orkney Grey, MY2014

There are a couple of posts on here about split inter-cooler hoses, might be worth checking as well. Common one to check is the hose under the throttle body.

Ye ill get a bottle of cleaner today, as I said i plan on doing the easy things first. Just wanted to clear up my error code query. 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE

Well after a couple of months of not using supermarket fuels the black smoke disappeared completely. I started using BP ultimate diesel ( or what ever its called) and normal BP Diesel.

Doesnt make much sense to me as I thought diesel was diesel but there you go! 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE

You would think so but I know for a fact that Morrisons add a percentage of biofuel to their diesel which might explain the poor burn you were getting. Jaguar used to warn diesel owners not to use biofuel in their engines so you may be on the right track there No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

I have always used supermarket fuels with no issues, but when I got rid of my FL2 in the summer and bought a Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 Cdti 163 I noticed my local shell garage was the same price as Asda so put a tank full of standard shell diesel in

Performance was down, economy was down (by about 5mpg) and didn't feel right. So I went back to supermarket fuel and figures improved again.

However Vauxhall have now diagnosed a failing turbo, as there is evidence of soot on the wastegate and the exhaust tip. They will replace it under warranty, but I believe its actually the boost sensor solenoid sticking causing the overboost problems im having.

Don't know if the fuel used would impact on the turbo in such a way though.

I've always been of the view that "supermarket fuel" is a bit of a misnomer. There's no Tesco refinery; they buy it wholesale and quite often it just depends where the fuel is refined that can impact quality. Obviously there are special blends for certain customers but the fuel will meet certain minimum standards. What can make the difference is the cleanliness of the tanks and delivery lines and even how often they are filled (and hence stir up the crud at the bottom of the tank).

I had a shell fuel card for years and there was one shell garage that you could guarantee always had crappy diesel but it was supplied by the same refinery as the others I used. Why? Old underground tanks.

Westville - all diesel has to have a percentage of biofuel by law. Morrisons had (and may still have, I don't have one nearby) a pump with a higher percentage of bio. It had warning stickers all over it. I happily used it in my TD5 but would hesitate in the FR. They also sell "normal" fuel which will have the normal percentage of bio. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months

200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
