I've just had a letter offering me a choice of a "Driver Retraining Course" or pay a fine and get 3 points. That came via normal post. I have 21 days to book a course, after which they will send me the fixed penalty - which I would assume comes by registered mail but you never know.

ive recently had to do the speed awareness course (£94 and 4 hours of my life I wont get back again!)

I ignored the first notice of intended prosecution, and waited until I got the second one, then booked the course.

The notices are not registered at all throughout the process, even if they notify you of fixed penalty and fine.

Its down to how big your brass ones are, as to how far you want to push the issue.

To be honest IMO its all very ''Spanish Inquisition'' in that they photograph you, but your not allowed to see the picture unless you choose to go to court which carries threats of £1000's of fines, points, first born child being removed etc.
They post you the letters notifying you, but via normal unreliable postal routes without any tracking. But if you don't receive them then that's your problem not theirs so you have to accept their word for it or go to court (see previous regarding threats of torture etc etc etc)

lose lose for the motorist either way. ( I was caught on the M1 J27-J26 South doing 72mph, having actually watched the gantry speed sign change to 60mph as I passed under it and got snapped immediately so yes, Im a little bitter Banging Head )

In my case it was entirely my fault - enjoying the sunshine and completely forgot I was in a 30mph zone. When I looked at the speedo I was horrified to see 40, jammed on the brakes immediately, then noticed I'd just passed the camera!

What was the speed awareness course like?

I was caught by a mobile unit and an SP30 was delivered via post.
I was fortunate and was offered the speed awareness course last year, which I completed.
So I avoided 3 points but had to spend an afternoon in a class room with other offenders and 2 guys from ROSPA.
There was Tea,Coffee and Biscuits Thumbs Up

The course was very informative and depending on the type of person you are.
You will either walk away with a better knowledge of road safety or still hold a grudge you were caught in the 1st place.
life's too short to be angry and bitter, enjoy the biscuits Rolling with laughter

Have to agree the tea and biscuits were a nice touch, and the instructors were pleasant and knowledgeable. Thumbs Up

My only real moan about it is that the 1st 2 hours were pretty good and informative, and yes I did learn a couple of new things. But the 2nd 2 hours was mostly just waffle and padding to try and justify the 4 hours and £94. Rolling Eyes

i like the speedcamera you have Nuts, but its just too large an object to stick to the dashboard, to remove each night so I don't have to buy a new one along with a new window

I got pulled over doing 43 though a 30mph village late one night. I had a company Freelander 1 and when the policeman said who owns the car I said Fujitsu - and what is their address? I gave them the HQ address in Tokyo, Japan which he tried to write down and at this point he seemed to lose interest. I was told to drive more carefully in the future. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I'm 53 and driving since I was 17, while on holiday in the lakes got caught speeding doing 47mph in a 40mph area.
Went on a speed awareness course and no points on my licence. The road was very poorly signed from 50mph to 40mph for 400 yards then back to 50mph. I beleave tourist get court all the time, nice little cash cow for the authorities.

Got a fee app for my phone from tomtom which I use when driving in areas dont know. The punishment does not fit the crime. 2013 hse auto, black, almond leather, exnon lights, factory privacy glass, exhaust finisher, rear boot spoiler, mud flaps. Body door side moulding and steps.

I got pulled a few years ago in my coach going through a 30mph temporary speed restriction at 40mph, the officer just let me off with a warning, making an example of me in front of passengers was enough for him I think.

So far my licence is still clean. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Why couldn't you get the photo?

When I was caught, I didn't even see the mobile camera unit, so was interested to see how/where I was caught. Politely asked for the photo and they sent it to me free of charge!!

It was a fair cop, so opted for the speed awareness course.

Informative and well worth attending in my opinion. The key is to turn up, sit down and shut up. The instructors neither care nor have any influence about how and where you were caught; in fact they may not even be from your local area so don't even know the roads you're talking about.

At that point you've been caught and owned up to it. Best bet is to just sit and learn.
