Turbo flutter

Good evening guys, can you help?

Sometimes when the drivers window is down and I'm pulling away gently from rest, I can hear a faint turbo flutter. Is this just the waste gate and quite normal?

Power is excellent, and there doesnt seem to be any turbo lag, and no smoke. The noise can't be heard inside the car, only when the window is down.

Yup mine does the same mate. Perfectly fine, sign of good turbo pressure and wastgate doing its thing. I quite lile the wastegate noise much better than a dump valve lol.

There's no wastgate on the FL2 Turbo.

i could be wrong here but i believe there is an internal wastegate as with most turbos. Wastegate/dumpvalve pretty essential on petrol as the sudden snap shut of the throttle body would cause turbo to stall and damage it.

On derv no throttle butterfly but id think it quite likely engine damage would result from how lean the air fuel mix gets on run off with the turbo continuing to spin full pelt.

There is no internal wastegate on a modern VNT turbo. The boost pressure is controlled by the VNT actuator, which moves vanes inside the turbo, altering the speed the turbo spins at.

The noise you are hearing is the vanes cutting through the air inside the turbo, as they move Thumbs Up

EDIT: A modern Diesel engine is a lean burn engine. The damage is caused by overfuelling, be it too much fuel, or not enough air. This is why cheap tuning boxes and unknown remaps should be avoided Thumbs Up

Fantastic explanation - thank you!

Interesting remap advice. I was thinking of having a remap done even though I'm happy with its performance. The consideration is more to do with potentially improved fuel consumption.
