I thought the 91 octane fuel I was using did not contain ethanol but I've now learned that it does.
After looking around I've not been able to locate non-ethanol fuel.
Am I going to have a problem?

I've been mostly using 98 for 5 or so years (mostly with previous car which used 91). At worst the extra milage I get out of a tank offsets the additional price. At best, as far as I can tell I actually get a minuscule better economy. The other advantage of not putting crap petrol in the car, is better long term care of the engine. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I wish I had access to 98; the most I can find is 91. The manual recommends against the use of
ethanol, so I was wondering what would happen if I do use it.

The manual advises up to 10% ethanol is permissible for Si4. MY15

Ethanol is the principal alcohol found in alcoholic beverages.

So people can decide for themselves how good or bad it is  FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,

Well then what a waste to put it in the fuel tank!

Using ethanol fuel in vehicles not really supposed to be designed for them hardens the rubber seals and may cause leaks over a period of time.
There are special nitrile/viton (something like that) seals for the purpose and many owners of classic cars have to upgrade if they use the new fuels.
One assumes all new cars now are designed with this fuel in mind so it wont be a problem??

The addition of ethanol in fuel is bad news. It attacks plastic tanks (there are plenty around) & causes corrosion in many metal ones. It also corrodes components made of zinc, brass, and aluminium as well as non-metallic materials such as rubber, cork & leather, all common in fuel systems. If you have an older vehicle or a boat the advise now is to drain the fuel system during periods of disuse to minimise the destructive effects of the ethanol. Why isn't the proportion of ethanol in fuel stated on the pump like the RON rating?

Makes you wonder whats good about it then really doesnt it?? Mind you I suppose it all comes from the EU, everything they come up with costs you a bomb.

And as I understand, whatever benefit might exist from using it is
offset by the cost to make it, which does beg the question; why bother?

Sta-Bil products are used by many American engine manufacturers to protect their engines prior to use. Never heard anything bad about it. Ethanol, on the other hand, does all the things mentioned and a bit more. If a car is not to be used for a while, it is a good idea to purge the fuel system of Ethanol to stop the degrading of rubber and plastic parts that may come into contact with it. Methanol has a similar, but worse, effect.

Years ago my mechanic, used him for 30 years, said additives are a waste of time. He said every now and then fill the car with 98RON as Australia has second rate 91RON petrol.

I started using 98 and 95 if I could not get 98 for the previous car (18 years, 230,000 km later & the engine was still great, 1.4L Polo (Seat Ibiza)) and the engine worked better and I never had a fuel problem in the last 5 years. My mechanic wanted and now has the car. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Whilst on the subject of additives, my local indie always uses flushing oil and then puts in a bottle of diesel treatment when doing a service. My LR dealer never does any of this (and charges more!). What experience do other forum members have? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
