Anyone running winter tyres all year

Just wondered as they appear to offer better grip all round and not just in the 7°C months.
A friend is going to take this route after experiencing much better performance even above the magic temp. Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?

Im running Grabber AT's permanently - no problems at all.

I ran Grabber AT2's permanently on both my FL1's for 60k and 20k respectively with no issues either.

Last well, grip well, look good. Thumbs Up

I did that last year (vredestein) and it worked fine, didn't notice any grip issues. I'm guessing I suffered some extra tyre wear though.

I'm switching to summer tyres this years tho, I have a set of 19" wheels booted in the shed which I've recently sprayed black Very Happy FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

I've still got my winters on as after winter they were down to about 3.5mm so thought I'd wear them out instead. They never did particularly well in high speed lateral corners where the car seemed to do a 4 wheel drift and thats getting worse now. I could just slow down to prevent that though...

Wear rate doesn't seem noticably higher, its not like an F1 car where chunks are coming off at least. Grip level seems fine up to around 18c but above that it definitely stops slower now.

Also noticed when doing emergency stops (suns out = plonkers about) I'm getting much more frequent ABS kick ins, but that could be just due to the lower tread depth.

Lol, this will throw a cat amongst the Pidgeons!!!!
In the dry (I stress dry!!) a tyre with marginal tread depth will actual grip better that it's newer equivalent!!!!

Why don't you guys just run M+S rated tyres??? That way you can use same tyre all year round!! Be gentle gents, I'm I'm Australia, our tyres just melt here!!!! MY15

Once the temperatures started to rise, I for sure noticed my winters struggled a little. Once I put the summer Michlines back on the car was so much crisper.

When the latitudes wear out, I will replace them with purely summer rubber. As I have my winters, I don't need all season tyres. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

I'm running Vredstein wintrac 3s all year - worked v well last winter in the snow, perhaps a little less lateral grip than a 'full' winter and so far seem to be handling the heat well - I came up from Barcelona friday in 32 degrees. So if you want a compromise that isnt really too much of a compromise I can happily recommend.

NB I run vredstein quatrac on my old FL1 and they DONT like summer and the tread quickly goes........

I'd heard they wear much faster in the warmer temperatures.

I'm running Avon Ranger 65's and they're cracking in both wet & dry. Very little noise from them due to the dirctional pattern. Very little roll and good grip on & coming out of a tight corner. Little bit extra spray due to the aggresive pattern - not really a big deal, jut hose the motor down more often Thumbs Up

I had nokian winter tyres over the winter, very very grippy but tended to feel floaty at speed on dry roads.
Back on the Continental summer tyre now, about 3-4 mm left and they will corner far quicker than the winters, the turn in and response is far superior, bit dicey during heavy rain though, aquaplaned very easily.
I will take these to the wire over the summer and then put the winter wheels on, come spring I will fit rubber to,the 19 inch wheels, looking at the Nokian summer zSUV range.

For what it's worth I've been using Vredestein's all-season Quatrac 3s for the past couple of years without changing. All-season tyres have improved greatly since I first used them maybe 10 years back and they're a pretty good compromise over using two sets of tyres, summer and winter. For some areas of the UK I'd think they are ideal.
For the FL2 though I've just bought a set of Vredestein's Wintrac 4 Xtreme in the correct size and rating for 19" wheels. I'm hoping these tyres plus 4wd will cope well with the prolonged winters we have here. I don't plan to take them off in summer either. Vredestein seem to use a fairly hard compound that lasts well in all conditions.

To anyone thinking of using winter tyres this coming winter I would suggest buying early while prices are very reasonable and stocks are good.
