I have just done this plate retention process (down load forms £80) from the FL2 ready for my new Subaru next month, its strange looking at the FL2 with a different number - making the parting easier though

Took about a week for the Retention Document to come through and 2 weeks for the new V5C to arrive.

I can affirm what Tonyc has said as we have just done it too. Download form V317 from the DVLC website this form is to reassign or place on retention your personal plate. If purchasing new its easier to place it on retention first, advise your new insurance company that you will transfer the number within 30 days of getting the new car, that way they will amend their records without charge!

Send off the form with your £80 cheque ours took a week too.... Note the new V5C ( log book) came back 2 days before the retention certificate.

When you have the V5C for the new car, send it off with the retention certificate and the number will be transferred, there is no charge for doing this! Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

It was a real pain when they closed the regional offices down as you could just pop along and queue up (granted for quite some time as they were usually very busy, but it was great as it could all go through there and then). At least since March 9th this year the cost to transfer has dropped from £105 to £80 and if you or the dealer you are purchasing a new car from does it online (armed with the V5 from your old 'donor' car with its original number on, the V5 for your new car and the certificate of entitlement to use your cherished number) the transfer is now done in 'real time', so you can put your cherished plates on your new car straight away after you've done the online bit.

I see you can put your number on retention for 10 years now all for 80 quid, I think it used to be 3 years. Its good to see that the DVLA are slowly moving along to the digital world.
