Carried out a service on my Freelander last week, pollen filter/air filter/fuel filter/oil filter and oil, all was easy apart from accessing the oil filter, I managed to do it ŵithout too much triuble but I found it a little awkward to undo, I could get a 27mm ratchet onto it but there wasn't enough room to allow the oil fiłter to be undinè fully with the socket so I ended up using a spanner which was a little awkward to do, like I say no major drama but I'm thinking of buying a 27mm flexible head ratchet spanner for next time, unless anyone has a better tool option to buy??

Flexi head is the tool to get, easy job with that.

It is much easier with the flexible head ratchet and then be prepared to spill the oil in the housing down your arm - yugh! - 2007(57) XS Auto, Rimini Red, Alpaca Leather.

I believe a low-profile socket is the recommended way.

I had not considered a low profile socket so thanks for that idea, looking at prices and it looks to be around £8 for the socket and £12 for the spanner so I will go with the spanner as this will come in handy at work too, thanks for suggestions all 👍 Black FL2

I also found out I could use it on my daughter-in-law's Ford Focus, so that's a bonus.

The FL2 is about the only engine where I haven't ended up with oil down my arm and up my sleeves! I think it's because there's a clever mechanism that drains the oil out of the filter housing and back into the engine once you start undoing it. In any case, once it's loose enough I tend to undo the last few turns from the top and pull the filter out that way - remarkably mess-free, in my opinion.

27mm ratchet spanner in use from under the vehicle. You only need to move a plastic pipe slightly to withdraw the housing and filter.
