my smart charge has a AGM setting, i was lead to believe that you do need the ones that state they are compatible

not that i have a AGM battery Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

tbh i don't know if the new car is

its a standard LR battery, i thought AGM were used in manual start stop cars though Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I didnt have a clue what an AGM battery was so I googled it rather than have my ignorance confirmed on here

They are used in many applications particularly where safety (acid is absorbed by a fibre panel) or where high consumption (cars with heated seats, steering wheels, windscreens etc) is required.

They are apparently a much more expensive battery to manufacture and buy.

I would imagine that start/stop technology can be quite power hungry particularly in heavy city traffic so it might only be the TD4e or newer start/stop versions that have them.

AGM were needed for the stop/start, as they have a high CCAh, so yes.
