Wrangler tyre noise

I have been driving 2 identical FL2s with identical tyres and rim sizes. 1 has 16k and the other 8k on the clock but the tyre noise is much more noticeable on the one that has covered 16K

Do the Wrangles get noticeably nosier as they wear?

Do a search, there are a lot of threads on this. Eventually at 4mm the whine sounds like your rear dif bearing is shot.

Anyone tried cross corner to corner swaps to see if that makes a difference?

My wranglers are horrible. I have now put them on the front, since the sound insulation is better at the front end.

There is plenty of tread left in the tyres but you can see that there are small 'chunks' of rubber that is effectively falling off the tyres, which is what I believe is making them noisy.

The Pirelli Scorpions I have on the rear seem fine. I have 19" rims in the garage that will be rubbered up and put on the car as soon as the noise gets more painful than the cost of the new tyres. I won't be putting any Goodyear tyres on the 19" rims.

Just to add to this, I've just read a thread elsewhere, the owner has absolutly slated the reputation of his Freelander to the pont where others have jumped on the wagon with him, LRA wouldn't assist with his so called Diff bearing failure, diagnosed by his local Indy, two weeks later with a very red face has comeback to say it was his Wranglers were worn down, changed them and the so called bearing failure has gone. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Two thoughts -
1) my original fit Wranglers (on MY 07) weren't particularly noisy, but subsequent ones were. Probably a change in the composition of the tyre (apparently manufacturers do this, even though the tread pattern and name remain the same).
2) The noise only really became apparent at about 4mm tread depth. At that point I'd be looking to change the tyres anyway. There are articles around (including a poster in my local dealer) suggesting that below 4mm performance is radically reduced. LR dealers won't sell a used car with less than 4mm tread.

I'm currently running on Wintracs, but my summer tyres are 18" Pirellis. Good performance but like others on here I'm starting to notice shoulder wear on them. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

I put my 19" wheels on last week, with a new set of Pirelli Scorpion Verde's. It is much quieter now.

The 17" Pirelli's that came off looked fine, almost new despite being fitted for about 18 months. The Wranglers that came off are completely shot at, despite being just 6-12 months older. The rubber is disintegrating with large flaps lifting up; no wonder they are so noisy.

And for the record, they started to get like that after less than 6 months of being on the rear, before being moved to the front to try and ease the noise they made. I have thought about getting in touch with Goodyear (although I should have taken the hour or two to just take them back to the garage in the first place).

And a picture of the new wheels....

For what it's worth, a couple of months ago I replaced some Wranglers as the treads was down and one had a nail in it and wasn't worth the £20 cost of repairing. The tyre fitter bought one of the tyres into the waiting room to show me some "castellation" and strange wear on the tread and said that he had seen a few FL2s with this where the wheel bearing was going. I nodded and said that the wheels sounded OK.
Anyway, last week the car went in for some further work on my "rear diff noise" which had come returned and this time the LR dealer replaced the wheel bearing which, lo and behold, had been the one with the strangely worn tyre.

This might be a red herring but worth keeping an eye on. Perhaps the bearing wear causes problems before you hear it. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

13MY GS SD 12k on original Wranglers, all evenly worn to 5mm. Fitted new (ebay) Evoque 18" wheels on Pirelli Verde, immediately noticed noise reduction.
I had no noise concerns with Wranglers, just fancied an upgrade.
The truth really, my partner and I (both 70+) and both Dec birthdays could not come up with birthday/xmas present ideas, both browsing online, I bought my wheels and she got her top range food mixer.

I will add to this. Car going in on Friday for a possible wheel bearing/rear diff fault noise. Running on Wranglers. *still* haven't got my arse in gear and checked tread depths, but visually all look good. I assume garage will know pretty quick if it is not the diff or bearing so I will report back probably on Friday.

Mine all looked good too and still had about 4 mm of tread. I changed them a couple of weeks ago to Michelins and the noise reduction was amazing. I had feared the rear diff problem and thought it was too much to hope that it was just the tyres but seeing that so many subscribers on here had noticed the problem with the later Wranglers, I went down that route first.

The trouble is I now notice other noises like a small whine from the engine. I hope it's just the steering column grommet but haven't yet investigated it. 1982 RR Classic-converted to 200TDi-gone

Just checked mine and have between 5.5mm and 6mm so hopefully not the tyres. Plus, getting the dealer to check it under warranty is free so may as well get it all looked over.
