Hi all

I feel like I may have a lifter valve problem, when I am driving the lr2 every time I seem to press the gas to increase speed it seems to make a tapping kind of sound, which stays until I drop the power right off again and the speed is steady, so say im doing 10mph if I push the peddle more I get this tapping sound ( like knocking ) until I lift off, does not seem to be speed related as it does it at all speeds when the speed increases, then once back at a steady speed it seems to stop the noise.

If I am parked and shes in N the noise does not seem to happen, but as soon as the engine has load it seems to happen

I was thinking of trying this Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter 350ml would this be ok to try in the td4? Also would and engine flush be worth trying first?

Failing that I wonder what the price of fitting new lifters would be

Is it a new sound Dan or has it always been there?
I don't know how much knowledge you have with diesels but do you think it's sounds like diesel knock or does it sounds like a old fashioned noisey tappet, if it's diesel knock sound then these engines sounds pretty knocky under acceleration anyway,
but if it's sounds tappety could it be the swirl flaps in the inlet starting to break up.

When I first got it, the sound didn't seem to be there but over the last few months have noticed it more. Had a defender 90 300tdi before which had a stunning engine ( always perfect ) Wouldn't of thought it could be the swirl flaps as they come out awhile back when we did the glow plugs, and all looked normal

Steve, cant be an injector as they not long ago got reconditioned and tested perfect

Might take off the engine cover and stick the gopro under the bonnet for a drive to see if it picks up the noise or something, should do as I can hear it in the cab ( sometimes it is worse than others though which is making me think valve / lifter )

Anyone think that the lifter cleaner stuff might hurt anything or should be fine to use in the td4? I do wonder if I should do an engine flush and new filter new oil first as tbh I havnt a clue when it was last done ( the service it was ment to have when I got it probs wasn't even done  Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

Tappets sound is there no matter the engine load.
If the sound is there depending on the load, then it's diesel knock.
You seems to pay too much attention to the car instead of enjoying the ride...

Alex you could be right but just odd that I have driven loads of vans and defenders and nothing has sounded like this and its alittle worrying that is has seemed to of gotten worse. will try and record it just to see what you think ( if it picks it up ) As my family would say once he sorts this noise he will find another to move onto!

using an oil flush or lifter cleaner shouldn't worry your engine as long as you get the oil changed afterwards,
has it been stood a long time that could of caused a sticky lifter or does it sound like all 16 are rattling?

To give you a little piece of mind (if one can do this ), mine does it too.
When dynamically pushing the throttle, especially until full warm up, the diesel knock is more pronounced to the extent it will definitively catch your attention. And it stops as soon as I easy off the throttle.
It's in a way a characteristic of these PUG engines.

Offshore, I have had the same concern over mine. I think its more pronounced due to the colder climate we are enjoying, this is my first winter with the Freely, so I'm on a constant learning/fearing all 'new' noises. Once warm, it's seems fine.

I do tend to drive without the sound system on, so I too am more sensitive to new noises  2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

Bushracing Good to know will give them a try when ready for the oil change, I wouldn't be able to tell from just listing as im not that good

Alex Does sound like this kind of thing but it does it even when the engine is hot and been driven for hours

Philclemo yes budy totally the same, first winter with the freelander 2 and every noise going is random, new I would be replacing things as its an old girl, but noises are the worst! Plus same as you I mostly drive with the sound system off or on low

Might have to try this 2t stuff but I think I read it takes ages to work? Will keep an eye on the 2t for that though  Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto
