auto changing noise

hi all, i have a 2008 freelander 2 diesel auto. in automatic mode the transmission has developed what i can only describe as a whooshing noise on gear change. if i override it with the command shift it doesnt do it. i have noticed that in the recent freezing weather it hasnt been doing it so much which makes me guess the transmission fluid is thicker? any one else having a similar problem?
