Click Click Click, wouldn't start and then fine when jumped?

Hi guys, as the title suggests, went to start the car, all it did was click click click etc, then jumped it off my golf and it was fine. Drove it then for about half an hour to a pub, arter approx 3 hours in there it started up fine and we drove home.

The bit that does seem strange is that the car had a new clutch on Friday, but as I was busy with work they kept it overnight and I collected Saturday morning. When I collected the car it started fine and drove perfectly home. It then sat on the drive from around midday yesterday until this morning when the above happened.

We have never had an issue before at all.
One thing I have looked at though is the battery and it does appear to be the original, on a 56 reg, so probably is well due a change.

Any advice greatfully received.

I think as this is the start of the cold season at eight years old I would change it. Smile

the snap of cold weather lets you know if your battery is on its way out
sometimes my battery is weak when it is only used for short trips throughout the week
had signs it was failing last week with a weak turnover and my blackvue switching off on low voltage
im getting a new one asap so I don't end up jumping it when the weather gets really bad - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

That is interesting what you say there though, as I agree in that every car I have owned that has ever needed a battery has started to show signs with a weak turnover etc, but I've never had one just go and be fine one minute and then just not start?

Had exactly same issue after clutch change.

AA man found the issue pretty quickly. Earth strap had not been tightened up on gearbox after clutch change. Few turns of the spanner and a week of intermittent starting problems resolved.

That was just one of many mistakes the dealer made. Never been back to them since. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc

(Gone) 2010 TD4 Manual GS - Stornoway Grey. Sold at 3yrs old & 64k miles. Final average consumption 39.2mpg.

Now that does make sense, as I said in the post above I have never had an issue with this car in the last year and then all of a sudden this happens immediately after having the clutch done.
Where abouts is the earth strap in question located exactly? I will check that then.
Thanks.

have you done the extra earth strap to the starter mod?, its the first thing I did when I got the car as its a known problem

easy 20 min diy, you just need a 1m length of earth strap from neg battery post to starter bolt - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

I haven't no, just had a quick search and have just seen all of the posts on the issue. Why was this caused then, is it genuinely an overlooked item from LR then?

no idea to be honest, maybe corrosion or just rubbish design, just one of those little niggles that seems to trouble us FL2 owners - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

Just a quick update guys, I checked all earth fixings etc and all seemed good to me so I took the plunge and bought a new battery (a yuasa 5 year guarantee one) and fitted that and since then it has been spot on touch wood.
I'm hoping it was indeed just a bit of a coincidence that the battery let go just as I had the work done....... we'll see over the next few days hey.

Thanks for all the replies, this is what these forums are all about. Cheers.
