My wife drives her auto off road daily but only down fields. If you have a Defender and a D3 why would you want to test the car, it is good in slippery conditions but is never going to threaten the others in the extreme conditions |

I had a job offer at the North Yorkshire LRE but the commitment was too great (wanted me to work every weekend) on top of my regular job. Pay too low to do it full time ![]() |

I have the 90 for extreme stuff and we have a new Galaxy for the family, thinking of downgrading the D3 to a FL2 to reduce outgoings but still want the ability to go off road properly. I wouldn't use a manual FL2 (no offence) as the lack of low range would mean slipping the clutch in tricky sections but the Auto should overcome that. |

My car is manual, but I've done the half day LRE in both, no doubt the Auto is more suited to off road.

i put an auto through the LRE at coniston hall, was lots of fun and seemed very capable, with the instructor saying bar the rock crawl and deeper water the fl2 could hold its own against a d3 etc

Did a bit of offroading with a manual Freel2 and i was surprised how well it did it. I was able to leave it in 1st up to 600rpm without stalling it.

Regarding ground clearance (though you likely know all this already), we've been researching GC modifications for the FL1 and have been told that the most straight-forward way to gain further clearance is to fit taller tyres... BFG ATs at the 215/70 size (on the Fl1) get you 30mm more clearance so I'd imagine roughly the same goes for the F2?

Ground clearance can be an issue. Over time you can look at the terrain and choose your line correctly. When I go out I can usually cover the same terrain as more capable models but have to be a lot more careful. The Break over angle I haven't had too many problems with. The exhaust hangs fairly low and will be the first to hit. Traction and the terrain response is great. I have never had an issue over gravel, mud and sand. Low range would be nice but a short first gear, hill decent control and 400Nm helps make up some of the difference. It all depends what you want to do. If you want to go places a RAV4 or CRV can't go then yes it will get you there. If you want to do all a Defender can do then no. Check the following vids: |

Did an LRE day recently, all of the FL2's at the LRE center where HSE Auto's, the instructors confirmed that the Auto is a better choice offroad. To a novice like me it was well impressive |
