I have tried many Range Rover Sports with front Brembos and was very exited how good these brakes do its job so always had the idea to put something similar to Freelander, I think Freeley brakes are too weak. I've done brake swap for TDV6 RRS from standard to supercharged Brembos and at the same time I measured these calipers to Freelander 2 but fitting holes on RRS and Discovery calipers/studs has gap of ~15cm and freelander is ~14cm so it didn't fit.

One day I went to local breakers to buy some parts for Evoque and saw Volvo S80 brake calipers laying on the ground and they looked big at first sight. I looked closer to them, measured holes for the bolts which is ~14cm, it had FoMoCo stamp on caliper carrier and I knew that front pads for Freeley and some Volvos are the same as well so it gave me idea. After some talk to the breaker he gave me these nice and good condition calipers with 95% of genuine Volvo pads and as new brake discs for funny price. It was removed from 2008 Volvo S80. We dealt that I'll return them back if will not fit to freel...

But it fitted bolt on and I'm very happy

Standard Freelander 2 front brakes are 302mm (or 300mm) compared to Volvo S80 which is 316mm.
After some quick search I found on Volvo forums that guys do upgrades for S80 316mm to 336mm from almost all XC90. The carrier bracket is only differnt and discs. This will be my next step Freelander petrol is 316mm as well and can be upgraded for diesel by replacing the caliper bracket and discs but the caliper it self and piston is bigger on Volvos caliper.

And some pics, compare the caliper and the disc by metal dust plate. 16mm is not that much but I like the upgrade and better braking.

Watching with interest. I'm a bit underwhelmed with the braking on my FL2. But then my last car was a 911 so it's a bit of an unfair comparison

That's very interesting will keep an eye on developments. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

It's true that light travels faster than sound, some people look quite intelligent until you hear them speak.

Be interesting to see if there are any vibration/juddering issues with the larger calipers. Brembos on RRS had to have harmonic dampers (steel masses) added to cure this.

Stock Freelander 2 diesel fronts 302mm vs. Volvo XC90 fronts removed from 4.4 petrol 336mm (most of XC90 has 336mm fronts). I'm going to mount them soon

Bob no vibration with S80 calipers. Will let you know about XC90

Fronts finally finished.

What this upgrade needs
-XC90 336mm calipers with cariers
-XC90 pads
-XC90 336mm discs
-cut the egde of dust plate which is too small for discs
-center alignment rings, local turner made me these 68x63.5mm rings.

I got good used calipers, discs and as new EBC green stuff pads.

I'm happy with the result.

Bob, for vibration, I didn't know that XC90 center bore/hole was bigger than Freelander 2, I found out that when started to mount all the parts so to avoid vibration due to dissalignment of the disc I put these center rings between hub and disc. It can hardly be seen in the picture anove

Between FL2 and XC90, on the disc, the braking width zone is the same? Meaning the brake pads from the bigger calipers are sitting entirely on the FL2 disc?
Because if it's the same, there is no need to upgrade the discs, only the calipers.
Indeed, because the small diameter, the same disc zone will pass more times in front of the brake pads and the disc will heat quicker, but we are not here on the F1 circuit.
From what I am remembering, the friction is proportional with the normal force's value and the nature of the material in contact and is NOT proportional with the surface.
So it matters the calipers, for a greater force and doesn't matter the size of the disc.

Dimenssion from center to breaking surface.
Same force (but caliper and piston is bigger so force should be bigger) x bigger lenght from center = breaking moment is bigger.

Even if the pad surface is the same, as the disc is bigger, it can lose the heat quicker . Having a bigger disc, and the calipers spaced out further, the gripping force is better. Also.

That's why you get better braking force and less fade with larger discs pads but with the same pad surface.

I was looking into exactly this; using the Volvo calipers & discs on the front of the Freelander 2.

I did find that the center bore of the disc was different on some models.

But there is an off-the shelf disc with the correct center bore, 336 x 28mm disc from Volvo XC70 2013 model that should bolt straight on to the front hubs, the Centric part number is 125.39044 (google it)

I really wanted to put some Brembo calipers on, like the ones from the 04-07 S60R & V70R, but I couldn't find the mounting dimensions anywhere and there is no-one local who has these calipers...

By the way, the bigger Volvo caliper looks IDENTICAL to the caliper used on the Ford Focus ST225. The reason I recognise it is that those calipers are often fitted to the Mondeo ST220 and the Jaguar X-Type as an upgrade. I remember now that they have been refered to as Volvo calipers.

If that's the case, there are off-the-shelf big brake kits for the Focus ST, I wonder if they would bolt up to the Freelander...? 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers
