Hi all,

I've tried to search the forum and galleries with limited success to determine whether the roof rail channels are supposed to have blanking plates when there are no rails fitted.

Having inspected the vehicle it looks like a roof rail kit was fitted at some time or another but was taken off (mainly cos i can see the marks on the paintwork it left behind and also the black trim channels look like they have some silver paint or something on it). I'm comfortable that the blanking plates are in place on the front of the vehicle but towards the rear there appears to be two dips in the channel on each side where the feet from a roof system would go. Also I can see the bolt holes in each of these dips which makes me think some blanking plates are missing as water would just enter and go somewhere else in the vehicle.

If they're missing, i'll go back to the supplying dealer and see if they will send them to me.

Funnily enough I have been looking at that on my Freelander 2 which I have only had for a week (second-hand).

Mine has nothing in the indentations, but looking at Microcat there are some sort of bolt/fixing (but not a blanking plate) which goes in the threaded holes. It is part number LR 001651 described as Hardware Miscellaneous 6 x 15mm.

They are available from a variety of suppliers for a couple of quid each but I can't find any decent images.

I would also be interested to know if they should be fitted as standard. As far as I know roof rails have never been fitted to my car.

I have now found these fitting instructions for roof rails.

This shows inserts in the holes in Figure 1 though I am not sure if these are the same parts as I quoted in my previous post.... Having looked more closely at my car the inserts in Figure 1 are the same as I have. My car is Stornoway Grey too and the inserts are the same colour....

I'm planning to remove the roof rails from my car (2006, with twin sunroofs).
I've seen the drawings for installation of rails.

Seems like I need to just remove the rails, get and fit some of the trim strips, as were originally fitted.

When rails are fitted, sealant is used.
When rails are not fitted, there's just a plastic plug that's pushed in (and screws out when fitting the rails).

My questiion:
When rails are fitted, what's the purpose of the 'sealant'?
Is it a sort of glue, to stop the roff-rail bolts from unscrewing through vibration?
Or is it to stop water actually getting through the roof and into the car?
Do I need to use sealant when returning the car to standard? The quick brown fox
