Rev,
In the UK handbook the max towing limit on road is 2000kg. (4400lbs), In the North American Market handbook it states 1585kg (3500lbs).
The Caravan Club in the UK advise not to tow a caravan more than 85% of the weight of a car. I think a similar compulsory ruling must apply over there hence lowering your towing limit. Younger drivers in the UK must not exceed the 85% rule.
There are people on this website who tow similar weights and haven't mentioned any problems. However most of us have diesels (TD4)

Great info! Thanks very much. Any idea why the UK and NA specs are different? Coming soon: LR2 HSE; Alaska White; Nav; Premium Sound; Bluetooth; Lighting Package

What do you guys find best for towing - Auto/Sport Auto or Commandshift? I'm doing my first trip with the 'van next week and wondered what you recommend from driving/performance/mpg points of view.

Apparently the roads in N.Yorks are the least suitable in the country for driving/performance/mpg whilst caravanning. And that's another CG fact Thumbs Up (best go somewhere else instead Wink) At work

I'm from God's county - why on earth would I want to cross to the dark side?! Laughing

Don't worry CG, I'm heading north to Keswick driving at 'off peak' times so that I don't get held up...

1. remove van from tow hook
2. add petrol to van
3. bbq
4. engage D and press accelerator enjoy the free feeling of the non vaners world, and a new sensation for you 'acceleration'

Laughing

Very amusing!! You never miss an opportunity CG, I'll give you that!

SERIOUSLY though, I'd be grateful for any comments about towing with the auto box.

I think I saw somewhere here that sometimes it would be useful to use the snow setting as the car will pull away more softly FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER

Hi Pete,

I use command shift quite a lot when descending down long steep hills using engine braking instead of the applying the brakes. This also helps to keep your speed down to the specified limits in France on certain steep roads on the auto routes.

I telephoned Land Rover technical department today to and asked them why there is a difference in the US and UK towing limits.
They told me it was American Legislation relating to the "Tow Receptors". Eventually I found out what he meant by the tow receptors is the towing bracket.
