For the first time ever I took my FL2 'off road'. I use the term loosely as I was just parking up on a field with the slightest of gradients. I got well and truly stuck - friends and fellow motorists thought it highly amusing. Terrain response seemed to do sod all! Wet sloping grass is possibly the most treacherous of all possible surfaces. The wee tractor on the golf course has 3" spikes on its tyres to keep it going on their nice mown lawns! Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

I could not agree with you more Navigator. I went on one of the 'off road' days run by Landrover and asked if they would park the car on a wet grassy slope and give me advice on how to deal with it.
The reply was not short, but basically those circumstances are the worst to handle, even by the most experienced of trainers. One Discovery, gone

The instructor on the LR day told me that wet grass is up there with ice for being horrendous to drive on. Also, the tyres play their part because the tread level and type of tyre make a big difference.

Many on here have commented that they don't rate the Continental M+S tyre when compared the highly praised Goodyear Wranglers.

I had Wranglers on mine and did some off roading in the Peak District and have been across wet grass and muddy fields with no trouble.

In fact, on the LR day, the instructor gave a tip as we drove up a horrendous muddy slope: Keep the revs around 2k where the TC steps in and pull the wheel from left to right to create a zig-zag traction motion up the slope. I made it up in one attempt but the weighty Disco 4 took 7 even in the hands of an instructor  LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I got mine up to its sills in mud in Scotland a few years ago. The side steps were well and truly in the mud, and it got itself out.

I see you are in the south east, so you might have been on clay soil. If you were then the freelander is utterly useless. It does not matter what tyres you have. I have tried the continentals and good years and on grassy clay you just spin the wheels and dig four holes no matter how good your driving skills are. On other ground types I do find the freelander very good though.

I have pulled away on a wet grassy slope many times with a caravan on the back without any problems. Even reversing up a slope onto a levelling ramp, where you have to overcome the automatic brake reversing mechanism, has never phased the Freelander. The tyres have always been Wranglers. Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

I find that just using tick over speed, a real gentle clutch and mud n ruts gets me most places on wet grass. Once you build a little momentum then you can add some throttle to up the anty.

Works for me anyway, even towing.  MY2014 SD4 XS

I took my FL2 on to a newly ploughed field in the rain. As I would expect, it struggled a little with the sloppy mud but preformed amazingly well and didn't get stuck. Spent a little time playing with the various TR settings to find one that really boosted performance on the mud.

I'd like to see a car try doing what I did.
