Mystery noise

Coming home tonight, I pulled out from a junction turning left, pulling away fairly quickly to get into the traffic.
As I pulled away I heard a very loud bang, which seemed to come from the back of my car.
Now I think it was my car, but I looked in my mirror and a chap on a motor bike behind was looking around as if he did not know where the noise came from.
I pulled up and checked all around my car and looked underneath, but nothing seemed amiss.
It may have been someone else's windscreen blowing or even a tyre blowout.
I carried on home, with seemingly no ill effects to my car - no further noises or strange behaviour.
I may be being paranoid. but if it was my car, has anyone got any idea what the loud bang may have been? 2011 XS SD4, Indus Silver (Getting to love it more and more)

Hard to say, but if things are ok and drives ok, then I wouldn't worry

Exactly same experience for us a few months back, looked high and low but alas could not find anything wrong with the car.. We thought someone dropped something from on high but there were no damage to the paintwork .. Rough neighbourhood .. Smile .. We forgot about it until you brought it up.. But since we could not find anything wrong we just did not worry

Putting my mind at rest a little now.
Car is going to dealers next week for a small rectification job, so will mention it to them.
The only experience I can match it to is when my drivers door window smashed - I thought I had been shot! 2011 XS SD4, Indus Silver (Getting to love it more and more)

Not wanting to jump on the bandwagon but it has happened to us once while driving along a straight road, the bang was very loud in the car and frightened the Censored out of us. It obviously came from outside and could see nothing in my mirrors but think it may have been a stick or stone thrown up by the wheel onto the underside.
It was loud enough for me to pull over but could see nothing so forgot about it, although at the time thinking the underside heat protection would amplify any noise if hit by something.

seems strange that a few people have experienced the loud bang Confused

Could it be something like a brake sticking and freeing itself or something Idea

Yes, could be a brake shoe stuck on. I had the same on my Defender when the hand brake stuck on....one hell of a bang when it freed itself! John

Not wishing to worry you but I have just read the other thread where someone had this noise which was a rear driveshaft snapping...not good! John

my first thought was something like a drive shaft, but i assume you would feel a difference in how it drove afterwards Smile

Not necessarily Nick. You just lose the rear diff driving anything. You may notice in snow though! Smile John

How to diagnose a faulty diff:

1. Find a steep, snow-covered hill
2. Drive up it

Did you make it? Smile

I had a driveshaft go once (admittedly on an old series 2) and it was exactly as you describe, pulling away from lights, massive bang from underneath.
